About the FC1 Permashield Folding Closure

The FC1 Permashield Folding Closure by The Australian Trellis Door Co is one of the most space-efficient commercial security closures available in Australia. Constructed from extruded aluminium, the FC1 is lightweight yet stable and strong — trusted by household retail names, airports, healthcare facilities, education buildings and commercial and hospitality venues across the country.

The FC1 is manually operated and collapses neatly to one or both sides of the opening, making it ideal for locations where space is limited and speed of access is important. Unlike roller shutters, it requires no overhead drum housing, meaning it can be used in applications with limited ceiling clearance. It spans any opening width and reaches heights of up to 4,500mm (4.5 metres), making it suitable for everything from a small kiosk to a large retail shopfront or airport concourse.

Assembled in Australia to ATDC specifications, the FC1 is custom-manufactured for each opening — no two closures are identical. The curtain sections fold effortlessly through a system of low-friction continuous interlocking hinges, resulting in a user-friendly, low-maintenance finished product.

Who the FC1 Is For — and Who It May Not Suit

This product suits… This may NOT be right if…
Retail shopfronts in shopping centres — any width You need a motorised closure (FC1 is manual only)
Airport kiosks and terminals Your application requires a full weather seal on external openings (consider pelmet box with RS7 ClearVision)
Hospital and aged care reception areas You need a ceiling that cannot structurally support an overhead track
Schools, universities and other educational buildings Your height is above the ATDC maximum
Hotels, clubs, offices and banks You can’t provide an overhead support structure where it is required
Curved and S-bend shopfronts (min. 600mm radius for wide panel) Your opening height is below the ATDC minimum — confirm with representative
Any opening width — custom manufactured to any span You require a cyclone rated closure
Locations needing ventilation (perforated aluminium or bar grille infill)

Real-World Use Case Scenarios

Scenario 1 — Shopping Centre Retail: A fashion retailer needs to secure a 6-metre-wide curved shopfront each evening. The FC1 Wide Panel (FC300) biparting closure stacks neatly to both sides, curves around the angled frontage using a 600mm radius track, and sits completely flush with the facade when open — no overhead drum visible during trading hours.

Scenario 2 — Airport Kiosk: A food and beverage operator in a busy Australian airport needs a lightweight closure that opens in seconds at peak times. The FC1 Slim Panel (FC150) single-stack closure opens in one sweep to the side, with a BCA-compliant breakout egress door incorporated to meet airport authority emergency exit requirements.

Scenario 3 — Hospital Pharmacy: A hospital pharmacy needs to secure a dispensing counter overnight. The FC1 with perforated aluminium infill (51% open area) allows ventilation to prevent humidity build-up while providing a strong physical security barrier with dual-sided key access for pharmacy and security staff.

Scenario 4 — Large Format Retail: WH Smith installed ATDC FC1 folding closures across nearly 53 lineal metres of storefront with irregular curved shapes and sloping floors. The perforated metal infill permitted maximum airflow and the FC1’s ability to accommodate curved track, sloping floors (tapered heights), and unlimited width spans made it the only viable solution. Before You Buy — Checklist

  1. Measure your opening width and height accurately. The FC1 can reach up to 4,500mm high and any width.
  2. Check your side room clearances. The FC1 stacks to one or both sides — confirm you have sufficient clearance for your chosen configuration.
  3. Confirm your structural supports can bear an overhead track. ATDC will not install tracks to non-structural supports.
  4. Decide on panel type: Wide (FC300 — 285mm), Mid (FC200 — 192mm), or Slim (FC150 — 148mm).
  5. Choose your infill: polycarbonate (visibility), perforated aluminium (ventilation + visibility), or bar grille (maximum ventilation).
  6. Decide on finish: natural anodised (standard) or powder coat to Dulux Duralloy colour.
  7. If your opening is curved, confirm the curve radius meets minimums (600mm for wide panel; 407mm for mid/slim). Special radius elliptical curves require you to supply a template or AutoCAD file.
  8. Consider whether you need a BCA egress door (required for emergency exit use; minimum height 2,250mm; minimum clear width 1,500mm).

Common Mistakes When Buying a Folding Closure

  • Assuming any width can be achieved in a single panel — the FC1 spans any width using multiple panels, but you must have adequate stacking pocket space. Check the stacking table before specifying.
  • Not confirming side room clearances before ordering — insufficient side room means the panels cannot stack fully open. Measure both sides carefully.
  • Ordering without confirming structural overhead support — ATDC will not install tracks to non-structural supports. Your builder or fitout contractor must prepare the opening.
  • Forgetting master keying — this is the purchaser’s responsibility. Special-purpose cylinders are available at extra cost; arrange with your locksmith before installation. ATDC will supply standard construction cylinders (keyed alike) with all locks.
  • Ordering for an elliptical curved opening without a template — ATDC require a customer-supplied template or AutoCAD file.
  • Not specifying the egress option when the premises is used as an emergency exit — BCA egress doors must be incorporated at the time of manufacture and cannot be retrofitted easily.

Technical Limitations

  • Manual operation only — the FC1 is not available with motorised or electric operation.
  • Not a full weather barrier for external applications — the FC1 is suitable for both internal and external applications but provides only a partial weather seal. For a complete seal on exposed external openings, consider alternative products or additional building works.
  • Overhead track requires structural support — cannot be installed to non-structural supports without builder preparation.
  • Special radius elliptical curves require a customer-supplied template or AutoCAD file.
  • Egress option only available in closures with minimum height 2,250mm and minimum clear opening width 1,500mm.

Problem → Product → Outcome

Common Questions About the FC1 Permashield Folding Closure

How much does an FC1 folding closure cost?

Folding Closure pricing varies depending on panel type, height, infill, and finish. Request a free no-obligation quote from ATDC at trellisdoors.com.au/contact or call 1800 657 435.

What is the maximum size of an FC1 folding closure?

The FC1 Permashield Folding Closure can be manufactured to a maximum height of 4,500mm (4.5 metres). There is no maximum width — the FC1 can span any opening width using multiple panels. Minimum height is 1,000mm.

Can the FC1 be used on a curved shopfront?

Yes. The FC1 overhead track can accommodate curves with a minimum centreline radius of 600mm for the Wide Panel (FC300) and 407mm for the Mid (FC200) and Slim (FC150) panels. Track curves are stocked in 45° and 90° angles. Other bend angles and larger radii can be accommodated on request. For elliptical curves, the customer must supply a template or AutoCAD file. Straight-line, curved, S-bend, and 90° configurations are all available.

Does the FC1 folding closure require a bottom track?

No. The FC1 Permashield Folding Closure uses an overhead track system only — there is no bottom track. This keeps the entrance completely unimpeded and eliminates trip hazards at the floor level. Intermediate locks across the span of the door use an up/down locking mechanism for seamless lock up. Floor-mounted sockets with spring-loaded dust caps are included for the lock posts, but these are flush with the floor surface.

What infill options are available for the FC1?

The FC1 is available with three infill options. Polycarbonate (3mm thick, clear or opaque) provides a good deterrent barrier with full or zero visibility. Perforated aluminium (3mm thick, Ø4.7mm holes at 51% open area) allows ventilation and reduced light transmission. Bar grille (vertical Ø12mm aluminium tubes reinforced full height) provides maximum ventilation.

Is the FC1 BCA-compliant for emergency egress?

Yes — a BCA-compliant egress lock or emergency breakout door can be incorporated into any FC1 folding closure that has a minimum height of 2,250mm and a minimum clear opening width of 1,500mm. The egress door is operable with a single down-action handle. ATDC’s folding closures have been reviewed against the Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions of Parts D1 and D2 of the Building Code of Australia 2011. Contact an ATDC technician for specifics and pricing.

What is the difference between the FC1 and a roller shutter?

The key differences are ceiling clearance, width capability, and curved openings. The FC1 requires no overhead drum housing, making it suitable for locations with limited ceiling clearance where a roller shutter drum would be impossible. The FC1 can also span any width — including very wide openings — and accommodate curved, angled, and S-bend shopfronts that a straight roller shutter cannot. The FC1 is manual only; roller shutters can be motorised.

Where can I get an FC1 folding closure installed in [city]?

The Australian Trellis Door Co installs FC1 Permashield Folding Closures across all Australian states and territories, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Darwin, Hobart, Newcastle, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Townsville, Cairns, and all regional areas. Call 1800 657 435, visit trellisdoors.com.au/contact, or email [email protected]

What warranty does the FC1 come with?

ATDC offers a 12-month warranty on all components and parts, and labour/installation, provided they are maintained in accordance with ATDC care guidelines. See the warranty page for full terms.
