Barricade Installation Details
The expandable crowd control barriers installed at Ikea’s Richmond store are mobile and trackless and have been configured in the most space-efficient way to prevent access to the store by sealing off entry via the escalators in the shopping centre. The barricades are generally a very effective access control measure and are often utilised in shopping centres, public and government buildings, and entertainment venues for this reason. The barricades installed at Ikea Richmond are at a standard height of 2020mm. A standard height of 2520mm is also available, and non-standard heights are also available at a premium. This is achieved by utilising intermediate locking mechanisms to separate the barrier into sections.

Fabricated from hardened precision-engineered steel sections and with numerous locking options available, these expanding barricades are formidable and secure yet are lightweight to operate, running on a series of heavy-duty 75mm bottom thermoplastic rubber non-marking castors. Both steel and aluminium expanding barricades are available depending on the application, with the latter more suitable for installation in a highly corrosive marine environment.

 

Safety Standards and Applications

OH+S tested for workplace safety and with a comprehensive and independent WHS Risk Assessment, ATDC’s expanding barricades are leaders in the temporary barrier field and are also independently tested for the rigorous dynamic impact and simulated climbing requirements under the Australian Standard AS 4687-2007 Temporary Fencing and Hoardings. Further testing has been successfully completed for emergency egress under the Building Code of Australia (BCA) in applications where this is required.

The Client: Westfield Doncaster

Westfield Doncaster in Melbourne have recently successfully trialled the installation of ATDC’s safety retractable barriers within the airlocks at the entrance to its main entrance in an effort to deter further break-ins to its shopping centre.

Compliance with BCA 

The expandable safety barriers installed at Doncaster comply with the BCA’s deemed to satisfy provisions in all relevant respects namely:

i) the barrier has a height not less than 1980mm;

ii) the barrier does not diminish the existing unobstructed egress width of exits and paths of travel to exits within the shopping centre;

iii) the barrier can slide open as well as swing open;

iv) numerous provisions relating to doorways serving as a  required exit or forming part of a required exit are not applicable since the barrier is instead a door in a path of travel to a required exit

v) it is readily openable without a key from the inside by a single downward action on a lever positioned approximately 1m from the floor; and

vi) the handle is of a type that the hand of a person who cannot grip won’t slip; and the handle has clearance from the back plate of between 35mm and 45mm

A rise in the number of break and enters through the main entry doors into shopping centres in Australia has become a burning issue in recent times.

This problem is further complicated by the fact that shopping centre entry doors normally fall within the restrictive deemed to satisfy provisions of the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and its emergency egress requirements.

Starbucks is an American public company and is the world’s leading specialty coffee roaster and retailer with over 21000 stores in 65 countries. It has more than 27 coffee houses in Australia alone. Portable Barricades

The portable barricades installed are mobile and trackless. Accordingly they require no headroom and no overhead support structure making them easy to operate   and cost effective to install since no structural bulkheads are required. Available in standard heights of 2020mm or 2520mm, the span of these portable barricades is unlimited due to their modular design and hence there is no need for heavy and unwieldy removable mullions. The portable barricades complement the aesthetics of the storefront with their sharp angled lines and high quality gloss powdercoated finish.

The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has recently completed an installation of its premium-grade aluminium portable safety barriers at Sydney’s Darling Harbour for The Australian National Maritime Museum.

Our Portable Safety Barriers

 

The Maritime Museum tasked ATDC with replacing its existing fixed barrier systems which were in poor condition having badly corroded, faded and tarnished due to their proximity to the marine environment at Sydney Harbour.

Further, the Museum wanted to remove their fixed barrier systems which were previously in place since they were a permanent eyesore and were not welcoming to the public, the requirements for their new perimeter fencing were that when unlocked the barriers were to be tucked away and stored completely out of site and further, that they would be able to withstand the highly corrosive surrounding marine environment.

ATDC installed its all-aluminium mobile expandable barriers to achieve these dual objectives of the Maritime Museum. ATDC’s barriers are manufactured from high tensile 20mm x 1.8mm all aluminium square box sections and have solid stainless steel rivets- these portable safety barriers have an anodised finish to 25 microns, making them suitable for installation in a highly corrosive marine environment with a high saline content.

Their non-marking thermoplastic rubber tread castors make them suitable for any installation on any type of finished floor. Their professional powdercoated finish has UV inhibitors so they will not fade or tarnish in sunlight where installed on the exterior of buildings. Semi-Modular Design

Completely retractable, mobile, trackless and able to span an unlimited width makes these commercial mobile barriers suitable for securing extremely large openings typical at high thoroughfare public access areas such as ports, airports and railway stations.

Available in standard heights of 1200mm or 1800mm (or available in custom made heights as required), the span of these safety barriers is unlimited due to their unique semi-modular design and thereby the need for removable mullions is avoided making them very easy to operate.

The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has recently participated in a high profile project at Singapore’s Changi Airport newest terminal, Terminal 4 (T4), with our security doors.

ATDC Providing Security for Major Airports

The Project

Working closely with procurement specialist JEB Asia, ATDC has supplied its unique security grilles to eight tenancies at T4’s Heritage Zone, which showcases Singapore’s local culture and flavour to international passengers.

The Heritage Zone in the transit area gives a glimpse into the evolution of shophouse architecture from the 1880s to the 1950s. Part of the job description included installing security grilles that would complement the traditional façade of the pre-war shop houses built before the Second World War.

 

Security for Retail Section

Below the shop houses are the retail shops whilst the second and third stories are residential units. There are preserved shop houses still in existence and they are under heritage conservation in Singapore’s Katong and Chinatown areas. A further requirement was that the security grilles were to occupy as minimal an amount of storage space as was physically possible when unlocked and opened.

 

What We Did

With the above objectives in mind, Changi Airport specified ATDC’s S07-2- side-by-side retractable security grilles, which are among the most space efficient commercial door systems currently available on the world market.

By installing the top tracks of these security grilles in a parallel tandem top track configuration, ATDC was able to offer a lock up solution to its client which occupied a mere 8% of the daylight opening spans of these tenancies.

Furthermore, through the use of its seamless up/down locking mechanisms, ATDC was able to provide a lock up solution over considerably wide spans without the need for any cumbersome removable mullions and without the need for any floor tracking to contain these doors.

A further requirement was that the locking mechanisms on the security grilles had to be keyable to the specific master keying system at Changi Airport.

Designed for Aesthetics

A special precious silver pearl powdercoated finish is applied to blend in with the general finishes of the immediate surroundings of the Heritage Zone. Standard ATDC stock finishes include pearl white or satin black although any Dulux powdercoat finish can be achieved to match any individual colour scheme.

The security grilles were all custom designed and fabricated to specific sizes from dimensions that were detailed on architectural and engineering drawings. They were attached to structural support frames designed in advance by JEB Asia in conjunction with ATDC.

The installation was successfully completed and Changi Airport are a very satisfied customer.

The Project

Working closely with internationally renowned shopfitters Kingsmen & Co, ATDC has supplied its cutting edge shopfront doors to secure the luxury store’s valuable merchandise. Kingsmen shopfitters have a global presence with 19 offices worldwide including South East Asia, the Middle East, Europe, the USA and more.

ATDC was involved with Kingsmen in all stages of the door design and installation process and delivered its quality shopfront doors to meet all of Kingsmen’s tight handover deadlines.

 

International Popularity

DFS Group is majority owned by Louis Vuitton. It is arguably the world’s leading international goods retailer and has over 9000 employees in 11 countries with a global network of duty free stores.

DFS has utilised ATDC’s shopfront doors on many of its international stores such as Hong Kong, Sydney and other Australian and Vietnam stores. ATDC has in most DFS projects worked closely with DFS as well as the particular specifying architects, structural engineers, project managers and shopfitters to solve all technical, design and installation challenges and to ensure on time handover of a quality product to this high end customer at competitive prices-every time.

Integrity and Longevity

The shopfront doors supplied for this project are ATDC’s 300mm panel polycarbonate infill doors. The curtain is manufactured from extruded aluminium sections with interlocking hinges suspended from a rigid overhead support track by commercial grade hangars with metal bearings permitting the curtain to fold, slide and stack in a low friction action for functional integrity and longevity.

 

Ease of Use and Practicality

Each of the shopfront doors supplied on this project had an S-bend curve shape in the top track with a 600mm radius which allowed the door to change position relative to the lease line at different points along the span. Up/down locking mechanisms were supplied on this project to achieve a speedy, efficient and seamless lock up without the need for any permanent mullions to lock on to and without the need for cumbersome removable mullions which are normally used when overhead doors such as roller shutters are used. Whilst keyless emergency egress can be supplied on ATDC’s shopfront doors this was not a requirement for this project.

The shutters are independently tested by an independent NATA approved testing laboratory to meet the security provisions AS5039 and 5040 of the Australian Security Standards.

Project Specifications and Management

Specified by Newcastle firm EJE Architecture and project managed by JMC Building, this project entailed installing The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC)The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC)’s electric operated widespan RS6 commercial roller shutters to numerous bar counters and poker machine room areas at the club.

The purpose of the roller shutter installation was to weatherproof the outdoor gaming rooms, protect the poker machines, and assist the club in complying with the legislation which prohibits smoking indoors in licensed premises and requires smoking areas to be open to the outdoors to allow the smoke to blow away.

Benefits of RS6 Commercial Roller Shutters

The heavy-duty commercial roller shutters installed by The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) at Cardiff RSL allow the venue to move its poker machines into the covered outdoor areas, which comply with the above-mentioned smoking legislation, and also secure these areas during closing times against both intruders and the outdoor elements.

The RS6 widespan commercial roller shutters have a 77mm aluminium slat profile and can span up to 6000mm in one section without the need for multiple roller shutters with their normally unwieldy and cumbersome removable mullions. The slat profile can be supplied in either a solid or a slotted section.

Operational Features

In this particular installation, the roller shutters were supplied with electric operation by way of keyswitch mechanisms which operated the shutters through a group control mechanism, allowing the roller shutters to operate either individually or as a series operating simultaneously.

Does ATDC Provide Higher Level Security?

ATDC’s domestic security grilles are ideal for securing wide span openings such as sliding glass bi-fold doors, patio doors, French doors and carports as well as also securing narrower passageways, alcoves, front doors and windows.

Track arrangements are optional but recommended in areas where a higher level security is required. It’s important to note that floor tracks are able to be installed in ways that do not present a trip hazard to the homeowner (For instance recessing the bottom track or installing it alongside a window or door sill).

What are the Fabrication Options?

The domestic security grilles are fabricated in either a toughened galvanized steel or marine grade anodised aluminium and powdercoated in a high quality ultra violet resistant black satin or pearl white finish whilst other powdercoated options are available on request to match almost any colour scheme. The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has installed its premium grade commercial Security 365 security plantation shutters at Camilla Franks’ boutique store at Sydney’s, Bondi Beach.

Camilla Franks is one of Australia’s premier fashion labels and their products are in very high demand making them a primary target for criminals who have frequently attempted to break in to the clothing group’s multiple stores on numerous occasions.

Security Plantation Shutters – Sleek and Stylish

ATDC’s sleek and stylish security plantation shutters were seen as an ideal fit for the clothing group since they provided both a security rated solution whilst not detracting from the overall feel and look of these traditionally themed retail premises. A high quality satin white powdercoat finish was applied to the shutters to complement Camilla’s corporate colours. The security shutters were installed across the shopfront to protect their high value merchandise and they were also installed to a dedicated room to provide privacy for VIP clients and to conduct private showings. ATDC were required to design and install some elaborate structural frames to support the security shutters including special purpose welded posts and steel support beams. Both hinged and bi-folding shutters were installed.

The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has recently completed an installation of its premium grade commercial security grilles for North Sydney Railway Station.

Commercial Security Grilles – Premium Grade

Installed at the interchange entry leading from the railway station through to Greenwood Plaza Shopping Centre, ATDC’s commercial security grille was installed to structural supports provided by Simco, the project managers for this job.

 

How it Works

The 6000mm wide grille was designed to retract back to a compact storage area of only 15% of the total area secured so as to be almost invisible during trading hours. Having a recessed floor track, the commercial security grille is no impediment to the free flow of foot traffic at the railway interchange which is extremely heavy, particularly during peak times.

A removable floor cover plate is in place during opening hours to create a seamless effect to the finished floor. The works for Simco were all carried out by ATDC late at night so as not to interfere with the running of Sydney’s trains.

Unique Locking Arrangement – BCA Compliance

A unique magnetic locking arrangement was installed on the commercial security grille on this project in order to comply with the BCA (Building Code of Australia). The magnetic lock is generally wired to the building’s fire indicator panel and is designed to automatically unlock and release in the event of fire.

In effect this arrangement creates a keyless egress system for emergency exit. ATDC does have other alternative locking methods for complying with the BCA, the type used depending on the nature and suitability of the particular project at hand.

Securing Railway Stations Across Australia

ATDC’s commercial security grilles are particularly appealing to Australian railway stations due to their heritage design and for this reason they are used quite frequently for securing railway stations across the country.
