The Australian Trellis Door Co (ATDC™) has recently successfully adapted a retractable flyscreen to its concertina style security screens.
Innovative New Ideas with ATDC
Concertina Retractable Screen with Retractable Insect Screen
High Quality Solutions
It has been a perennial challenge for ATDC’s engineers, trying to successfully adapt flyscreen mesh to collapsible style security screens due to the potential of the insect screen mesh becoming intertwined amongst all the moving parts of the security screens.
ATDC has overcome these issues by utilising a high quality spring loaded flyscreen which retracts in tandem with the security screens and slides along a fully captive extruded aluminium top and bottom track, rolling into a concealed slimline pelmet box on the side of the opening. These insect screens are similar in colour to the security screens and so are almost invisible and unnoticeable, blending into the surrounds.
This innovative idea meets a growing customer demand for ATDC’s security screens namely to provide formidable security screens whilst also providing protection from insects and other vermin.
Domestic Security Doors
Typical domestic applications for ATDC’s security screens including securing sliding glass doors, patio doors, alcoves, carports, French doors, windows, passageways, front doors and bi fold glass doors.
Unique to ATDC’s security screens is that whilst providing a formidable security barrier, they fold out of sight when not in use behind curtains or blinds so as to be practically invisible.
Modern Aesthetics and Reliable Security
When locked, ATDC’s security screens permit maximum sunlight to filter into the room they are securing allowing the free flow of fresh air and ventilation, keeping the room light, fresh, bright and breezy and now also preventing flies and other insects from entering the premises through the screen.
Precision engineered from marine grade aluminium or toughened steel, ATDC’s extensive range of security screens have multi point locking options, full frames for extra strength and either stainless steel rivets or brass rivets providing that extra level of home security.
Our Service Areas
ATDC’s extensive range of security screens are now sold in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Newcastle, Geelong, Townsville and in all other regional towns and centres across Australia.
How can I keep my home secure without blocking light and airflow?
The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC)’s retractable trellis security screens provide a strong security barrier while still letting in sunlight and fresh air. They also fold out of sight when not in use. When unlocked and opened, they fold back to a compact side stack so as to be almost invisible behind blinds or curtains.
Can an insect screen be retractable?
The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC)’s concertina retractable screens can include (as an optional extra) a retractable insect screen that helps prevent flies and other insects from entering. The screen is designed to blend in and stay almost invisible when not needed.
Can plantation shutters keep insects out?
Yes. They can include a removable insect screen that helps keep out flies and mosquitoes, especially in hot, humid climates.
Is the insect screen installed on a concertina security door effective?
Yes, it is a good and effective deterrent against insects.
What maintenance do insect screens need over time?
The insect screens need to be kept clean and dusted using a cloth or vacuum.
Is it expensive to install an insect screen on a retractable security door?
An insect screen will be an extra expense over and above the cost of the retractable security door.
ATDC is Trusted for Major Installations to Improve Quality Control
CSL Behring is a global leader in the plasma protein therapeutics industry and is the chosen national plasma fractionator for Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan.
CSL utilised ATDC’s retractable aluminium barrier at each end of the production lines in their Melbourne production facility to assist management in maintaining a clean, sterile area and so assisting their strict quality control and OH+S requirements.
Retractable Barrier Systems
ATDC’s trackless retractable barrier was CSL’s preferred product to resolve their OH+S and quality control. The retractable barrier is formidable and strong given its rigid steel construction and its multi-point locking mechanisms provide a secure lockup solution whilst its trackless construction means it’s economical and flexible.
Furthermore the retractable barriers fold back to a mere 12% of the opening width they are securing making them extremely space efficient. Read more about our retractable barriers.
ATDC’s retractable barriers are also available in a double diamond mesh configuration meaning the cross linkages are tightly woven together resulting in a 65 mm pitch between the steel sections making it virtually impossible for a person to put their hand through the door to reach objects on the other side of the barrier. Read more about Double Diamond Security Gates.
With ATDC’s retractable barrier having keyless egress locking in cases requiring emergency exit, BCA compliance can be achieved in most applications.
Additional Security Applications
Additional applications for ATDC’s retractable security barrier include providing access control, securing elevated work platforms, assisting in loss prevention and inventory control and securing warehouse loading areas and despatch docks.
The retractable barriers are now available for sale in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Darwin, Townsville, Newcastle and all regional towns and centres across Australia.

BWS SELECT QUALITY PORTABLE FENCING
The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) is proud to announce that it is the preferred supplier of portable crowd control fencing to the BWS liquor group nationally across Australia.
ATDC: Preferred Supplier of Portable Fencing for BWS
About BWS
BWS (or Beer, Wine & Spirits) is an Australian chain of liquor stores owned by Woolworth’s Endeavour Drinks, which also owns Dan Murphy’s, Cellarmasters and Pinnacle Liquor. It is Australia’s largest retailer of liquor with well over 1,400 stores across Australia.
Applications of ATDC Portable Fencing
ATDC is supplying and installing its portable fencing in differing applications – first and foremost as BWS shopfront door closures inside shopping centres, and secondly as store dividers within Woolworths supermarkets where it is being used to separate BWS stores from the supermarket area of Woolworths. The latter is often a requirement of the prescriptive liquor licencing laws, which vary from state to state.
Recent Project: BWS Chadstone
The above image shows a recent installation at a new BWS store at Chadstone in Victoria. The fencing systems installed at Chadstone are at a standard height of 2020mm (note that 2520mm is an alternate standard height) and are mobile and free-standing, requiring no headroom. Their width is unlimited due to their semi-modular design.
They are manufactured from precision-engineered steel sections and have wall-mounted and floor-mounted locking options. They are compact and stable but easy to operate, running on a series of heavy-duty 75mm rubber non-marking bottom wheels. Discover more about ATDC’s mobile crowd control fencing.
Loss Prevention Applications
ATDC’s portable fencing systems are also being installed across the liquor display aisles in Woolworths Metro stores, where it is being used as a loss prevention tool to deter theft of alcohol. In these applications, ATDC’s double-diamond mesh portable fencing systems are being utilised.
These systems have the door mesh very tightly interwoven so as to reduce the pitch between the cross-links, making it more difficult for would-be thieves to reach through these barriers to access the liquor on display. Learn more about ATDC’s double-diamond mesh barrier.
Wider Applications of Portable Fencing
ATDC’s precision-engineered portable fencing is also being used by many other blue-chip corporates across Australia, including Coles Supermarkets and Liquorland stores.
Other suitable applications for ATDC’s portable fencing include securing pop-up stores, kiosks and other temporary retail tenancies; access control for shopping centres and public buildings (e.g. railway stations, airports, ferry stations, bus terminals); Worksafe applications such as building sites; sports stadiums; public events; securing bonded warehouses, factories, and loading docks. The Australian Trellis Door Company™’s (ATDC™) unique range of commercial security doors is suitable for securing reception counters, canteens, bars and serveries.
ATDC Provides Bespoke Security Options for all Commercial Applications, including Countertops and Bars
Why Choose ATDC’s Doors for Commercial Security?
ATDC’s security doors are extremely versatile; they concertina sideways out of the way and out of sight when not in use making them almost invisible during trading hours.
Security Doors for Counter Tops
These security doors are suitable for securing counter tops for many reasons. For example, they can accommodate curved shaped counter tops. These security doors can traverse a 90 degree angle over a tight 600mm radius turn (View Curved Trellis Doors).
They can also meet at right angles (or in fact at any angle) and in this way can secure an L-shaped configured bench top. The up and down keyturn shootbolt locking mechanisms provide a seamless unobstructed lock-up solution that requires no unsightly permanent lock posts and no clumsy and cumbersome removable mullions.
Can They Be Trackless While Still Providing Robust Security?
Trackless security doors are also an option in instances where no support structure is available to fix to. These security doors are also available in a double diamond lattice which pitches the cross metal linkages very tightly together which restricts persons reaching through the security door to reach valuable items behind the door.
Constructed from precision engineered steel sections and finished in a high quality powder coated finish these unique security doors are robust and strong and provide a formidable deterrent against attempted break and enters, and is a valuable inventory control tool for loss prevention.
ATDC’s security doors are available for sale in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, and Darwin as well as in all regional towns across Australia.

Where Can I Buy Security Doors?
Security door providers are a dime a dozen in the current market, but not all companies are built the same. With a multitude of options available, it can be difficult to find a reputable supplier that you feel comfortable with.
Luckily, the team at The Australian Trellis Door Company™ have put together this article to help you navigate the pool of potential competitors. By following a few simple steps, you’ll be able to find your perfect match, putting you well on the way to safeguarding your home or business.
Can You Search Online for Security Door Companies?
The first step in your search for a security door should be a detailed Google search. You shouldn’t just look for the first company that pops up on your search, but rather you should dig deep into forums, websites and review sites. Gathering information from as many sources as possible will help make your decision easier in the long run. Search for companies with a good reputation, a strong financial standing and an impressive warranty that you can rely on. This will help you make a great final decision.
Is it Worth Visiting Security Door Company Showrooms?
You can narrow down your search using Google, but nothing beats physically visiting showrooms. By visiting various showrooms and assembly plants, you’ll start to get an idea of how companies operate and just what they have to offer.
You want to look for successful manufacturers that produce great products and deliver friendly customer service. Serious security door companies should be prepared and ready to show visitors around their showroom, providing a great atmosphere for potential customers.
At The Australian Trellis Door Company™, we always ensure that visitors walk away with a wealth of knowledge about our products and our company culture.
How Do You Look for Established Security Door Companies?
Turn away from the typical “one-man shows” that the security industry has become renowned for. These shady operators have garnered a poor reputation in industry circles for bad workmanship and questionable business practices. We cannot stress enough that it is always advisable to choose a well-known, well-trusted security door and screen manufacturer.
Try to find companies that have been in business longer than the warranty on their products. These companies are more likely to be dependable and legitimate than newer, unknown companies.

The Australian Trellis Door Company™ (ATDC™) has completed a very large installation of its S08™ and S05™ retractable steel security doors at the prestigious Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School in Melbourne’s Keilor East.
Grammar Schools Protected by ATDC Doors
What Did This Security Project Include?
ATDC were specified for the project by Melbourne based architectural firm McBride Charles Ryan, who worked closely with ATDC in detailing all aspects of the security door installation for this large school project. Challenges that had to be overcome included securing very wide curved apertures with pronounced sloping floors as well as the absence of walls to lock the security doors onto.
Retractable Steel Security Doors
ATDC were able to recommend both their S08™ and S05™ retractable steel security doors for the school, which helped overcome all design and installation challenges including the provision of seamless up/down keyturn shootbolt locking mechanisms which were easily keyable to the school’s restrictive master key system. The 4 metre high overhead fixing points were well within the height specification of ATDC’s retractable security doors.
How Did ATDC Complete This Job Successfully?
Working closely with project managers Construction Engineering, ATDC assisted in achieving timeous lock up under very tight deadlines. ATDC’s retractable steel security doors were installed over school entries, hallways, passageways, alcoves, doors, windows, classrooms, playground access areas, school hall, library and service desk areas.

Clubs Combat Smoking Provisions With Security Barriers
Current legislation bans smoking indoors across NSW’s 3,700 licensed venues. The legislation allows smoking in areas which are 25 per cent open to the elements (known as the “75/25” open air provision), whilst smoke needs to be allowed to be blown away. Venue operators have been putting significant effort and expense into modifying their gaming areas to accommodate the smokers.
Trellis Style Doors
One relatively inexpensive product becoming increasingly popular with these venue operators to assist compliance with the 75/25 rules, is the S06™ Trellis Door, available from the Australian Trellis Door Company™.
The open-style nature of these expanding steel trellises allows smoke to blow away through the doors. They also provide excellent security to the clubs’ expensive gaming machines out of operating hours. Furthermore, when desired, these trellis doors can be opened to the sides and tucked away completely from site.
Security Doors – Heavy-duty Steel
The doors are made from heavy-duty steel and are secured on each end by auto slam-locking posts, or they can be fitted with emergency egress locking. They are top-hung and come with a number of bottom track options including fixed, recessed, hinged or removable. Use of a bottom track can be avoided completely and replaced by the use of patio bolts. The doors can operate in a straight line or may be curved through a radius of 600 degrees (S08™ Curved Trellis). For storage purposes, these doors are folded away to the side of the opening and may be recessed into a cupboard.

The recent success of The Australian Trellis Door Company™’s (ATDC™) mobile expandable security door installations for retailers at Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne International Airports has led to similar successful projects at overseas international airports such as Heathrow International, Hong Kong International, and Nadi (Fiji) International Airport.
Expandable Security Doors for Airports
Recent Installation
The above image shows one of 4 recent installations at Port Moresby International Airport, Papua New Guinea where ATDC’s expandable security doors have been installed to secure large retail tenancies at the airport’s recent upgrade.
Unique Demands
With security of stock and property a primary concern for these retailers, ATDC’s portable expandable security doors were specified by numerous Australian based architectural firms that were looking for a cost effective security door. It needed to be capable of spanning very wide expanses across irregular shaped openings that had no overhead support structure.
The ATDC Solution
ATDC’s expandable mobile security doors satisfied all these requirements. Folding neatly out of the way when not in use, these trackless expandable security doors are stored in joinery cupboards on the extremities of the openings or simply wheeled away on their heavy duty bottom castors and stored off site.
Access Control Measures
More recently the world renowned Plaza Premium Lounge Network has installed ATDC’s expandable security doors at the entrance to its lounge at Terminal 2, The Queen’s Terminal, Heathrow International Airport. Plaza Premium Lounge is a global service brand headquartered in Hong Kong. It operates in more than 120 global locations in 28 airports and has over 2500 employees. (www.plaza-network.com).
Plaza Premium has installed ATDC’s trackless expandable security door as an access control measure –the barrier is installed across the entry to the business lounge –this particular opening has minimal fixing points and the overhead structure is too high for a cost effective overhead door to be fitted. And ATDC’s precision engineered barrier with its high quality exterior powdercoated finish was deemed suitable for the high profile location
Market Leading Movable Security Screens for International Airport
Airport Movable Security Screens
The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has installed its market leading movable security screens for the Swiss based Dufry AG at Perth International Airport.
Dufry – Duty Free
Headquartered in Basel Switzerland, Dufry has in excess of 2200 duty free stores across the world, employs more than 29000 staff and operates in over 64 countries.
ATDC successfully installed their OH+S safety tested, movable security screens at the Collections and Perth Street Markets tenancies (both stores owned and operated by Dufry).
Trackless Free Standing Solution
In both instances these mobile, trackless, free standing screens resolved the client’s shopfront security requirements in the absence of any meaningful support structure to support their installation.
Project managers for the job were Jolimont based Cooper & Oxley and the specifying architect was Fratelle Group from Northbridge, Perth.
Mobile Safety Fencing for American Airlines
Safety Barriers
The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has installed its safety fencing to the departure gate area for American Airlines at Sydney International Airport.
The safety fencing has been installed to restrict access and pedestrian traffic to the departure gate during specific, limited hours of the day.
ATDC Mobile Fencing Installations
ATDC has also installed thousands of metres of its safety fencing at multiple locations at both of Sydney’s international and domestic airports in many different applications including screening off shopfronts, restricting access to the very wide expanse of area where duty free merchandise is displayed for sale during closing hours, screening off work-safe areas for OH+S purposes, securing customs areas of the airport, access control to areas for screening of carry-on luggage and other security locations, and securing entry to bonded warehouses for freight.
The mobile fencing is perfectly suited for these applications, given that they are mobile, trackless and free standing, they require no headroom or overhead support, and their width is unlimited due to their modular design. They are manufactured from toughened steel sections and have wall mounted and floor mounted locking options. They are compact and both safe and easy to operate, running on a series of heavy duty 75mm rubber non marking thermoplastic bottom wheels. The fencing is typically available in standard height modules of either 2020mm or 2520mm, although custom heights can be tailored to the needs of any application or project.
Steel and Aluminum Options
Both steel and aluminium safety fencing are available with the latter more suitable for installation in a highly corrosive marine environment such as coastal locations. The clear anodised and UV-resistant Dulux powdercoated finishes provide the anti-corrosion characteristics of these cutting edge aluminium barriers.
ATDC’s safety fencing is OH+S tested and are also independently tested in an approved NATA laboratory against the Australian Standard AS 4687 -2007 Temporary Fencing and Hoardings. They have also been successfully tested for emergency egress under the BCA.
Premium grade portable barriers Installed at Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant at LAX
Premium grade portable barriers have been installed at Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant at LAX International Airport in Los Angeles.
Portable Barriers – Premium Grade
Wolfgang Puck is an Austrian Born-American and is an internationally renowned celebrity chef, award winning restaurateur, newspaper columnist, famous television personality, part time actor and philanthropist. His group’s activities also include catering services, cookbooks and premium grade licensed products.
The portable barriers installed at Wolfgang Puck’s LAX restaurant are mobile and trackless and have been configured in a multi-angled shape to accommodate the unique contours of the storefront. Being trackless and free standing, these portable barriers require no headroom at all which is normally a necessity for overhead door systems and they require no overhead support structure making them easy and economical to install since no structural bulkheads are required. Available in standard heights of 2020mm or 2520mm (or available in custom made heights as required), the span of these portable barriers is unlimited due to their unique semi-modular design and thereby the need for heavy, unsafe and unwieldy removable mullions is avoided making it easy and safe for staff to operate. The portable barriers are able to blend in with the aesthetics of the storefront with their sharp precision angled lines and high quality gloss powdercoated finish (standard finishes are either a black satin or a pearl white although any finish in the dulux Australian powdercoat range is available as an extra over option).
The Manufacturing Process
Manufactured from precision engineered high tensile steel sections and with both wall mounted and floor mounted locking options, these portable barriers are compact, sturdy and formidable yet are very easy to operate running on a series of low friction heavy duty 75mm bottom thermoplastic rubber non marking bottom castors. Both steel and aluminium portable barriers are available with the latter more suitable for installation in a highly corrosive marine environment such as coastal, beachside or riverfront locations. The natural anodised and UV-resistant powdercoated finishes provide the extra anti-corrosion qualities of these quality aluminium barriers.
Tested and Approved
OH+S tested under the Australian legislation for safety and with a detailed, written and independently audited WHS Risk Assessment, The Australian Trellis Door Company’s (ATDC) portable barriers are stand out leaders in the field and are also independently tested in an approved NATA laboratory for dynamic impact, simulated climbing and wind force overturn conditions under the Australian Standard AS 4687 -2007 Temporary Fencing and Hoardings. Further testing has been successfully completed for emergency egress under the Building Code of Australia where required.
ATDC’s portable barriers are also available in a double diamond lattice pattern with the steel mesh tightly interwoven resulting in the pitch between the metal cross linkages at a mere 65mm to 70mm. This prevents people putting their hands through the mesh to reach merchandise on the other side of the barrier making the portable barriers an extremely effective loss prevention aide.
Security for Retailers
Suitable applications for ATDC’s portable barriers include achieving temporary security for pop-up stores, kiosks and other temporary retail tenancies, access control for shopping centres and public buildings (such as railway stations and passenger terminals for instance at airports, ferry stations, bus terminals), Worksafe applications such as construction sites, sports stadiums, public events, entertainment venues, securing of warehouses and loading docks. ATDC’s portable barriers are also available for hire on a long, medium term or short term basis.
INCREASED FOCUS ON SHOPFRONT SECURITY FOR AIRPORT RETAILERS
The security landscape is changing throughout the world, with Australia being no exception. For the first time Australian retailers are facing new security risks that before had only been experienced in films and on TV. ATDC provide mobile security barriers to combat these issues.
Airport Shops Require New Security Strategies
What Security Measures are Retailers Investing In?
The demand for increased security has seen retailers proactively investing in a number of different measures to protect their merchandise from vandalism and theft, including those retailers at airports and other public buildings across the country as well as retailers in shopping centres, strip retail shops, restaurants, clubs, hotels and gyms.
What Are ATDC Doing to Help Airport Retailers?
In recent years the Australian Trellis Door Company™ (ATDC™) has been successfully installing its extensive range of retailer friendly mobile security doors and security shutters for retail stores at airports across Australia including Brisbane International, Melbourne Domestic and International, Sydney domestic and international, Cairns, Perth, Gold Coast, Port Hedland and Darwin International Airports.
Which Airport Retailers Have We Worked With?
Many of Australia’s leading retailers are relying on ATDC’s successful track record and extensive security industry experience and are installing their quality range of security doors and security shutters across their retail shopfronts. Leading retailers such as Purely Merino, Australian Way, RM Williams, Billabong, News Travels, Quicksilver, and Flight Centre to name but a few.
Recently Heinemann, the global German-owned retailer, was awarded the duty free concession at Sydney International Airport and has installed nearly 600 lineal metres of ATDC’s portable, expandable, roll away security barriers/doors to secure its store. This is the largest single contract ever awarded in Australia to date for portable security gates.
And JR Duty Free has recently installed 60 lineal metres of ATDC’S top-hung SO6 heavy duty trellis security door at its new store at Brisbane International Airport.
Why are Our Doors Ideal for Airport Retail Applications?
ATDC’s security doors and security shutters are unique-they fold back to a mere 15% of their expanded width so as not to be visible during trading hours;they can be made to comply with egress requirements under the BCA where required; they can be manufactured to span unlimited widths and can accommodate curved apertures. The trackless barrier does not require an overhead structure as it is completely freestanding. And ATDC has a fully documented WHS risk assessment completed for its trackless security gate.
