How Secure are Security Doors

What to Look for When Shopping for a Security Door

Installing a security door should help you sleep easy at night knowing that everyone is safe from potential danger. Purchasing one of these doors carries the implication that it holds up to certain standards and requirements. While this is often the case, some companies in Australia have been known to cut corners and use materials that are not considered industry grade quality.

To avoid this worrying trend, we have compiled some key information on finding the highest quality security doors.

Australian Standards 5039-2008

All security doors should comply with Australian Standards 5039-2008. These regulations were formulated by a committee of experts in the industry, including the Australian Window Association, Master Builders Australia, Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia and the National Security Screen Association. This panel of experts decide the materials that should be used in security doors to ensure maximum protection for their owners, while also mandating required performance under a series of strength tests.

There are three aspects this committee has recognised as crucial to the performance and integrity of security screens and doors:

  • The strength of the screen door/window grill or mesh
  • The strength of the adaptor frame and how it is fixed
  • The structural strength of the door frame or window frame

Security Screen Strength Tests

To comply with the relevant code, security tests need to be carried out by an authorised National Association Testing Authority (NATA). These tests determine the strength and reliability of your security screen, window or grille. The tests include:

  • The anti-jemmy test
  • The pull test
  • The dynamic impact test
  • The knife shear test
  • The probe test

Only three tests are applicable under the Australian Standards for sliding security doors. These consist of the pull, anti-jimmy and dynamic impact tests.

Materials

Security doors need to be made from sturdy materials that pass these tests and keep your home safe from potential intruders. If you’re in the market for a new security door, make sure that you are aware of all the materials used in the production process. Stainless steel mesh that is durable and corrosion resistant is recommended by industry experts.

Don’t Hesitate to Ask for Written Certification

After purchasing your new security door, it is essential that you ask your provider for a written certification that indicates compliance with Australian Standards 5039-2008. Never be shy about this and always push to make sure that your door provider keeps you informed about the ins and outs of their products.

At The Australian Trellis Door Company™, we guarantee the very highest standards of quality for all of our doors and shutters. We provide all of our customers with the finest security doors and screens on the market as well as the written certification to prove compliance with industry standards.

ATDC Involved in Prestigious Wynyard Walk Project in Sydney’s CBD

The Australian Trellis Door Company™ (ATDC™) has been involved with the NSW Government’s $300 million prestigious Wynyard Walk project in Sydney’s CBD, a project which entails construction of a world class, fully accessible pedestrian link connecting Wynyard Station to both Barrangaroo and the CBD western corridor.

Folding Security Doors Utilised in World Class CBD Installation

Folding Security Doors Utilised in Sydney CBD Installation

The Project

ATDC was engaged by the lead architect for the project, Woods Bagot, who approached ATDC to assist in designing a folding security door to secure Railway House, a heritage building on York Street with doorways leading to York Lane.

Folding Security Doors

It was imperative that the folding security doors blended into the surrounds of the historic building so as to have minimal impact. In this regard the doors were to be trackless and designed to pivot out of the way when unlocked and not in use. A special powdercoat finish (Signalschwarz) was selected from the international RAL powdercoat range to further complement the heritage façade of the building. Discover more about ATDC’s pivoting trackless door.

An Aesthetic Design

ATDC were involved in all aspects of the design process of the folding security doors and liaised with the project managers, CPB Contractors, to arrange for the challenging installation where ATDC were not permitted to affix to the heritage façade nor to lock on to it.

To avoid attaching to the façade specially designed welded frames were constructed which were attached to the floor and ceiling. To avoid locking on to the façade special seamless up/down locking mechanisms were utilised. In addition the locking mechanisms on these folding security doors had to be keyed to the master key system used for the site.

Installations Throughout Australia

ATDC’s folding security doors have been installed on many heritage buildings throughout Australia including many of the old railway stations in QLD, NSW, WA and Vic. In each case the antiquated olde style appeal of these doors as well as their low impact on each of the relevant historic buildings have been their major advantages. Read more information on our heritage applications.

Curved Security Door for Sydney Healthcare Facility by ATDC

Expanding Door Installation for Healthcare Facility in Australia

New Technology

ATDC’s expanding security door features the latest cutting edge technology including seamless up/down locking mechanisms which are built into the door allowing for a secure closure without the need for any removable mullions. Once the door is unlocked and open it is completely out of sight and concealed within joinery cupboards at the extremity of the opening. (More information on ATDC’s S08 curved expanding security door here).

Heavy Duty Security Doors

The expanding security door is suspended from a heavy duty extruded top track which is shaped to accommodate exactly the tight curves and angles of the aperture –the top track is itself supported from a continuous top support beam which runs immediately above it without any air gaps. The top track is recessed into the ceiling and there is no floor track. Both factors enhance the seamless effect of the door. The tightest radius curve available is 600mm.

Customisable For Your Needs

The expanding security door is also available on a parallel top track configuration whereby the door is designed to stack back in dual sections on multiple tracks thereby reducing the side stacking factor to a minimum. (More information on the parallel top tracking S07 side-by-side stacking door here)

With a maximum height of 4200mm, the expanding security door is fabricated from rigid square steel sections. It has a professional high quality powder coated finish. Standard colours are black satin or pearl white while other powder coat colours are available to suit almost any environment.

Best Uses

Suitable for securing curved apertures such as curved shopfronts, curved hallways and entrances, curved counter tops and hotel lobbies and reception areas, restaurants and kiosks.

ATDC Installs Security Doors at Woolworths Stores

The Australian Trellis Door Company™ (ATDC™) has installed its formidable security door at the Woolworths Supermarket at Hope Island near Brisbane.

ATDC Doors Trusted to Secure Iconic Australian Supermarket Woolworths

Sliding Security Doors

The Australian Standard compliant security door was installed at the main entry to the store on behalf of Aspect Design, the project manager and builder on the project, in an effort to deter break and enters to the premises.

(For more information on ATDC’s compliance with the Australian Standards for sliding security doors please see our article)

Security Door Features

The S06 security door was selected for numerous reasons, including the fact that when not in use during trading hours it retracts sideways and folds completely out of the way so as not to impede customer access and further so as not to obstruct visibility of merchandise. At night however, when the store is closed, the security door provides an excellent deterrent.

How Does it Work?

This Australian Standard compliant security door has numerous security features including a 5 pin cylinder, triple contact tamper resistant lock with anti-jemmy protection, and a full heavy duty frame. As such the S06 security door provides Woolworths and many other businesses in Brisbane with the level of protection that many owners demand and many insurance companies now require from their clients.

The S06 security is galvanised and powdercoated in either a satin black or pearl white finish as a standard. Other powdercoated finishes are available on request to blend in with almost any corporate colour environment.

(For more information on the S06 security door please visit our website)

ATDC Specified for Major Supermarket Chains

Which Stores Are We Supplying and Why?

The S06™ security door is being fitted in BWS, Dan Murphy’s and Dick Smith Electronics stores across Australia for the following reasons:

Firstly, whilst providing a formidable security barrier by night, these concertina security doors fold back out of the way and out of sight by day, allowing for maximum showcasing of merchandise during trading hours; and

Secondly, by night there is optimum visibility through these security barriers, allowing for 24/7/365 display of merchandise.

What Are ATDC’s Doors Securing?

The S04™ trellis security door is being installed nationally in Woolworths and Caltex Petrol stations to secure power distributions boards, whilst permitting ventilation through the security door when locked.

The S04-1™ mobile security barrier is being installed in Australia wide in Big W stores to separate the Optometrist section of the business from the rest of the store. These security barriers are trackless requiring no top support structure, and are wheeled away during trading hours and stored out of the way in designated cupboards.

Heavy Duty Security Door Installed for BP Melbourne

The Australian Trellis Door Company™ (ATDC™) has recently installed its S06™ heavy duty security door at the BP Petrol Station at Lysterfield in Melbourne.

Security to Meet Heavy Duty Petrol Station Needs

Heavy Duty Security Door for BP Melbourne

Luke Plancke, the retail manager, supplier relations at Endeavour Petroleum, said the group had ordered the security door following two previous break-ins over a 6 week period which caused the Melbourne company major financial losses as well as serious disruption to their business trade.

In each case the intruders entered the premises by breaking in through the front door, in one case by reversing their vehicle through the doorway. This follows a spate of similar break-ins to commercial premises in the Melbourne metropolitan area and.

ATDC Entrusted to Increase Safety

As a direct consequence of this activity, there was a major increase in demand for ATDC’s security doors for Melbourne-based businesses.

Luke Plancke was suitably impressed with the service he received from ATDC. He said, ‘The service was amazing, I could not be happier and I’m amazed at how quickly the door was made and installed. I’m very happy with the product.’

High Level of Security

The S06™ heavy duty security door was chosen by BP for many reasons including the fact that it folds completely out of sight during trading hours but at night provides the high level of security provided by Australian Standards rated security door products. With its tamper resistant triple contact locking mechanism and heavy duty full frame, this security door now provides BP and many other businesses in Melbourne with the level of protection many insurance companies are now insisting on.

ATDC Security Doors for Service Stations

Many of ATDC’s security doors and roller shutters are being installed at service stations across Australia including at Woolworths Petrol service stations where ATDC’s products are being specified throughout the rollout of new service stations. Unique Security Doors for Sydney Light Rail Project

Currently under construction is a new light rail network for Sydney which will feature a 12 km route extending from Circular Quay along George Street to Central Station and further to other eastern Sydney suburbs such as Moore Park, Kensington and Randwick. Due for completion in 2018 the Sydney Light Rail also incorporates the inner West Light Rail through Dulwich Hill.

ATDC Working on Major Government Projects

ATDC’s Security Doors around Sydney

ATDC’s heritage style security doors have already been installed over the past few years at many State Rail and Sydney Trains sites including St James Station in Sydney’s Elizabeth Street, Museum Station, Wynyard Station, Wynyard Walk-Railway House, Westfield Railway Interchange Parramatta, and more recently Central Station including Sydney’s Light Rail platform entry. ATDC is currently working on a project for Sydney trains at North Sydney station.

These security doors fold out of the way and out of sight when not in use however when locked they help preserve the heritage appeal of these typically old style railway station facades.

Multi-point Locking Options

With multi point locking options and full frames for extra strength these steel constructed, precision engineered security doors are an effective deterrent against after hour entry. The ATDC security door range includes the only two security doors of its type that comply with the Australian Standards for sliding security doors having successfully passed rigorous testing at a NATA approved testing facility in Sydney.

ATDC Across Australian Railway Stations

In addition to Sydney Rail installs, ATDC’s security doors have been installed at railway stations across the country including sites for Queensland Rail (for example Townsville Railway Station and Brisbane International Airport’s Skytrain), WA Rail and VicRail. More recently, ATDC has supplied its doors at numerous tram stations for Metrail in the Melbourne metropolitan area. These doors are now also sold in Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Darwin, Hobart, Newcastle, Geelong and all regional towns across Australia.

Expandable Barriers for Australian Shopping Centres

The Australian Trellis Door Company™ (ATDC™) has recently installed its expandable barriers for shopping centres throughout Sydney.

Expandable Barriers For QVB shopping Centre

Custom Security for a Heritage Building by ATDC

These security barriers were installed in multiple locations for many reasons including improving access control and general security at the centre. By installing the expandable mobile barricade in strategic areas, ATDC was able to assist in locking down certain areas of the centre and thereby not only reducing the cost of manned security patrols but also in deterring vagrants and homeless people from sleeping in the shopping centre. Furthermore, the expandable barriers assist in reducing theft of fresh produce, food and other stock which is generally delivered to the centre outside normal trading hours.

Trackless & Custom-made 50’s Style Barriers

The expandable barrier used is trackless, it is constructed either from either precision engineered steel or aluminium and the older 50’s style of the expandable barriers also complements the striking heritage features of QVB’s architecture while the professional baked enamel powder coated finish. Multi-point locking options are available for extra security if required and some of our expandable barriers have passed the rigorous testing requirements under Australian Standard 4687-4007 Temporary Fencing and Hoarding including Simulated Climbing, Wind Force Overturn, Foothold Aperture and Impact tests.

Deemed to Satisfy BCA Expandable Barriers

Our expandable mobile barricade fence system is able to comply in certain circumstances with the deemed to satisfy provisions of the Building Code of Australia. For more information about our BCA Compliance, please see our BCA Compliance article.

Other applications include securing temporary tenancies, pop-up kiosks, occupational health & safety, Worksafe applications and can be purchased or rented on a long term or short term basis.

ATDC Installs Expandable Barricades for Sydney’s Barrangaroo Shopping Centre

Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has supplied and installed its expandable barricades at various commercial and retail locations across central and southern Barrangaroo.

Expandable Barriers Installed Across Barrangaroo

The Project

Barrangaroo is located on the North West fringe of Sydney’s central business district and spans an area of 22 hectares along Sydney Harbour. It is currently being redeveloped from historical shipping and stevedoring facilities by the Barrangaroo Delivery Authority (on behalf of the NSW State Government) into a world class facility comprising recreational space and parklands, high quality commercial, office and retail space, several new apartment buildings, a hotel and casino. Once completed in 2024 it will have its own metro station and will be home to 3500 residents.

Expandable Barricades for Retail Applications

The retail tenancies secured have required temporary lockup with a robust and safe trackless barrier which requires no structural support, is able to be fully mobile when unlocked during trading hours, and is able to traverse multi-angled shopfront configurations over a wide span.

The expandable barricades installed by ATDC have satisfied all the criteria mentioned above and are also tested under the current OH+S legislation for safety with a comprehensive independent WHS audit.

Installation at Barrangaroo Ferry Terminal

ATDC has also supplied its expandable barricades to the new Barrangaroo Ferry Terminal. Here the double diamond version of the expandable barrier has been supplied since these barricades have been tested by a NATA testing authority under the temporary fencing and hoarding provisions of Australian Standards AS 4687-2007 for dynamic impact, simulated climbing, and foothold aperture test-all these requirements were instrumental in  ATDC winning the expandable barricade contract at Barrangaroo. In this instance ATDC’s product was specified by Cox Architects while the project manager was Gartner Rose (now owned by Lend lease).

Read our article on the Installation of Safety Barriers at New Ferry Terminal in Sydney.

Double Diamond Mesh Barricades

Whilst the expandable barricades to the retail tenancies were installed at a standard height of 2020mm, those at the ferry terminal were installed at 2400mm high with a maximum available height of 2520mm. These expandable barricades installed at Barrangaroo are all fabricated from steel and run on a series of heavy duty 75mm bottom rubber non marking castors. Floor mounted and wall mounted locking options are available.

View further information on ATDC’s double diamond mesh barricades.

Finished for Durability

Aluminium expandable barricades are also available and their anti-corrosive qualities make them more suitable for installation in high saline content marine environments such as coastal, beachside or riverfront locations. Their anti-corrosion characteristics are enhanced by their natural anodised finish which is further complemented by their UV-resistant powdercoated finish.

See further information on aluminium barricades.

Secure Temporary Tenancies

Typical applications for ATDC’s expandable barricades include securing temporary tenancies, access control for shopping centres and public buildings, Worksafe applications, sports stadiums, entertainment venues, and warehouses. They are also available for hire on a long, medium and short term basis. See our article on our Fully Assembled Expandable Rental Barriers for Hire.

ATDC Supplies Folding Security Gates for Townsville Rail

The Australian Trellis Door Company™ has recently installed its folding security gates for Queensland Rail for the recent upgrade at Townsville Railway Station, replacing similar gates that ATDC had installed at the same premises nearly 20 years prior.

Train Station Security for Townsville

Folding Secuity Gates - Townsville Rail Station

The Project

The general job description for ATDC was to supply folding security gates that not only enhanced the qualities of this heritage listed government building but also did not impede the flow of people in this public space.

Pivoting S07 Folding Security Gates

ATDC’s pivoting S07™ folding security gates met all the requirements for this project. The S07™’s appearance is similar to the old style gates which were used in lifts and elevators in the days gone by and on this project were powder coated in a heritage green finish to match the ornate wrought iron steelwork suspended directly above it.

Further, these security gates were designed in such a way that they hinge aside 90 degrees away from the opening thereby maximizing the free flow of public foot traffic through the entries and exits of the railway station. The absence of floor tracking was an added feature to enhance people flow.

Top Quality and Warrantied

The folding security gates are precision engineered with triple contact point locking and come with a 10 year installation warranty. In this instance the gates – which are galvanized and powder coated, had survived in good order on the external of the railway station for nearly 20 years.

Our Range

Australian Trellis Door Company™ supplies a comprehensive range of cutting edge folding security gates for the commercial, industrial and residential markets. These doors are available for sale in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Newcastle and Geelong and in all regional locations across Australia.

ATDC’s range includes gates that comply with Australian standards for sliding security doors – the only folding security gates in the country that are security standard compliant.

Australian Trellis Door Company™’s (ATDC™) unique security door is ideal for retailers of valuable merchandise which by their very nature require strict protection and control; namely firearms, alcohol, cigarettes and pharmaceuticals.

Efficient Security Doors

ATDC’s security door is robust and strong, being constructed from heavy duty steel; it is fully framed if required. This enhances impact absorption. It also has multi-point locking options.

ATDC’s security door can be configured to form a functionally strong and decorative security cage (as depicted in the above image) allowing the retailer to both protect merchandise and clearly display the goods for customers to see. With only limited numbers of employees receiving keys to the security cage, inventory control is further enhanced.

Ideal for Commercial Applications

Being fully retractable, this versatile and space efficient security door folds back to only 15% of its expanded size allowing the retailer to quickly access the products when needed. The blend of security and ease of use makes these doors perfect for retail environments.

Customisable Options

Further, this security door is also available in a double diamond configuration where the lattice is tightly interwoven resulting in a 65mm pitch between the metal cross links. This prevents persons from being able to reach through the security door to grab the valuable items behind it. View more information on the double diamond security door.
