ATDC Installs its Portable Barricades for Starbucks in Melbourne

The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has recently installed its portable barricades for Starbucks at its new store Ringwood store at Eastland Shopping Centre in Melbourne (pictured). Starbucks is an American public company and is the world’s leading specialty coffee roaster and retailer with over 21000 stores in 65 countries. It has more than 27 coffee houses in Australia alone. ATDC’s cutting edge portable barricades have been installed to secure Starbucks’ new shopfront at Eastland.

Portable Barricades

The portable barricades installed are mobile and trackless. Accordingly they require no headroom and no overhead support structure making them easy to operate   and cost effective to install since no structural bulkheads are required. Available in standard heights of 2020mm or 2520mm, the span of these portable barricades is unlimited due to their modular design and hence there is no need for heavy and unwieldy removable mullions. The portable barricades complement the aesthetics of the storefront with their sharp angled lines and high quality gloss powdercoated finish.

Manufactured from precision engineered high tensile steel sections or alternatively fabricated from extruded aluminium and with a multitude of different locking options, these portable barricades are extremely robust yet are easy and lightweight to operate as they run on a series of low friction heavy duty 75mm bottom castor wheels. Both steel and aluminium portable barriers are available.

The portable barricades are OH+S tested  for workplace health and safety and are also independently  tested and certified  in an approved NATA laboratory  for dynamic impact and simulated climbing (amongst other tests) under the Australian Standard AS 4687-2007 Temporary Fencing and Hoardings. Successful testing and compliance has also been conducted for emergency egress under the BCA.

Safety Applications

Suitable applications for ATDC’s portable barricades  include achieving temporary security for temporary retail tenancies, access control for shopping centres and government  buildings (such as railway stations and passenger terminals such as at  airports, ferry stations), Worksafe applications such as construction sites, public events, securing of factory  loading docks.

Portable Safety Barriers at The Australian National Maritime Museum

The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has recently completed an installation of its premium-grade aluminium portable safety barriers at Sydney’s Darling Harbour for The Australian National Maritime Museum.

Our Portable Safety Barriers

The Maritime Museum tasked ATDC with replacing its existing fixed barrier systems which were in poor condition having badly corroded, faded and tarnished due to their proximity to the marine environment at Sydney Harbour. Further, the Museum wanted to remove their fixed barrier systems which were previously in place since they were a permanent eyesore and were not welcoming to the public, the requirements for their new perimeter fencing were that when unlocked the barriers were to be tucked away and stored completely out of site and further, that they would be able to withstand the highly corrosive surrounding marine environment.

ATDC installed its all-aluminium portable safety barriers to achieve these dual objectives of the Maritime Museum. ATDC’s barriers are manufactured from high tensile 20mm x 1.8mm all aluminium square box sections and have solid stainless steel rivets- these portable safety barriers have an anodised finish to 25 microns, making them suitable for installation in a highly corrosive marine environment with a high saline content. Their non-marking thermoplastic rubber tread castors make them suitable for any installation on any type of finished floor. Their professional powdercoated finish has UV inhibitors so they will not fade or tarnish in sunlight where installed on the exterior of buildings. Further information is available on ATDC’s aluminium portable safety barriers, including specifications and images.

Semi-Modular Design

Completely retractable, mobile, trackless and able to span an unlimited width makes these portable safety barriers suitable for securing extremely large openings typical at high thoroughfare public access areas such as ports, airports and railway stations. Available in standard heights of 1200mm or 1800mm (or available in custom made heights as required), the span of these portable safety barriers is unlimited due to their unique semi-modular design and thereby the need for removable mullions is avoided making them very easy to operate.

Various Locking Options

Also available from ATDC is a high tensile steel product and with both wall mounted and floor mounted locking options, these portable safety barriers are compact and strong yet are very easy to operate running on a series of low friction heavy duty thermoplastic rubber non marking bottom castors. ATDC’s steel portable safety barriers are safety tested for OH+S compliance and have also been successfully tested for compliance to Australian Standards AS 4687-2007 for Temporary Fencing and Hoardings. Further information is available on ATDC’s steel portable safety barriers including specifications and images.

Temporary Security Applications

Suitable applications for ATDC’s portable safety barriers include achieving temporary security for pop-up stores, kiosks and other temporary tenancies, access control for shopping centres and public buildings, worksafe applications such as construction sites, sports stadiums, public events, entertainment venues, securing of factory loading docks. ATDC’s portable safety barriers are also available for hire. For further information on some of these safety applications please see article on our Safety Barriers in the Industrial Sector.

The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has recently completed a high end project for its premium grade shopfront doors for DFS Group at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. (See picture)

Working closely with internationally renowned shopfitters Kingsmen & Co, ATDC has supplied its cutting edge shopfront doors to secure the luxury store’s valuable merchandise. Kingsmen shopfitters have a global presence with 19 offices worldwide including South East Asia, The Middle East, Europe, The USA and more. ATDC was involved with Kingsmen in all stages of the door design and installation process and delivered its quality shopfront doors to meet all Kingsmen’s tight handover deadlines.

International Popularity

DFS Group is majority owned by Louis Vuitton-it is arguably the world’s leading international goods retailer and has over 9000 employees in 11 countries with a global network of duty free stores. DFS has utilized ATDC’s shopfront doors on many of its international stores such as Hong Kong, Sydney and other Australian and Vietnam stores. ATDC has in most DFS projects worked closely with DFS  as well as the particular specifying architects, structural engineers, project managers and shopfitters to solve all technical, design and installation challenges and to ensure on time handover of a quality product to this high end customer at competitive prices-every time. For examples of other DFS Group projects that ATDC has worked on see article on our Concertina Doors for DFS Hong King Intl Airport on our website.

Integrity and Longevity

The shopfront doors supplied for this project are ATDC’s 300mm panel polycarbonate infill doors –the curtain is manufactured from extruded aluminium sections with interlocking hinges suspended from a rigid overhead support track by commercial grade hangars with metal bearings permitting the curtain to fold, slide and stack in a low friction action for functional integrity and longevity. Each of the shopfront doors supplied on this project had an S-bend curve shape in the top track with a 600mm radius which allowed the door to change position relative to the lease line at different points along the span. Up/down locking mechanisms were supplied on this project to achieve a speedy, efficient and seamless lock up without the need for any permanent mullions to lock on to and without the need for cumbersome removable mullions which are normally used when overhead doors such as roller shutters are used. Whilst keyless emergency egress can be supplied on ATDC’s shopfront doors this was not a requirement for this project. Further information is available on ATDC’s shopfront doors on our website.

ATDC Lockable Security Shutters Complete with Insect Screens

The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has developed a unique high end lockable security rated shutter targeting primarily the residential market and incorporating both security features and lifestyle benefits alike. For further information see our article on Security Plantation Shutters for Top Level Security on our website.

Insect Screens for Humid Climates

Amongst these lifestyle benefits is an innovative removable insect screen which is particularly applicable in hot humid climates such as Australia to keep out those pesky flies and mosquitoes.

The insect screens are most often supplied with easy to operate turn-on buttons which allow for quick and easy removal when they require cleaning. In a limited number of cases, the particular application may require the insect screens to be permanently screw fastened on. Customers do however need to be mindful of the fact that there may be small gaps between the panels of the security shutters at both the top and the sill where the panels come together.

In addition to this unique insect screen, the lockable security shutters have other important lifestyle benefits such as offering privacy and shade, preserving views with their sliding multi track multi-fold systems and also obvious fire advantages. In addition the adjustability of the individual louvres allows the homeowner to control the amount of sunlight, breeze or fresh air that will flow into the home. Furthermore the aluminium extrusions which form the backbone of this product have a high quality anodised finish which is ideal for installing these lockable security shutters on the external façade of premises enabling them to withstand the weathering effects of the sun’s UV rays as well as the rain, storms and dust. These shutters will not warp, crack, fade or degrade when installed on the building’s exterior surface and this longevity and durability is enhanced by a professional ultra violet resistant powdercoated finish. For further information on the weathering qualities of this product see our article on our Security Shutters in Apartment Complex near Bondi Beach on our website.

Security Features – Premium Grade

The security features of these premium grade lockable security shutters include marine grade reinforced aluminium extrusions which are locked into a heavy duty surrounding metal frame –the locking system is by way of a 3-way patented locking mechanism. The shutters are independently tested by an independent NATA approved testing laboratory to meet the security provisions AS5039 and 5040 of the Australian Security Standards. For further information on this high security product see the article on the Security Plantation Shutters for Top Level Security on our website.

Commercial Applications

Whilst commonly used to cover domestic openings such as French doors and patio doors, sliding glass doors , bi-fold doors and windows, ATDC’s lockable security shutters are also suitable for

ATDC Installs Expandable Barricades for Sydney’s Barrangaroo

Barrangaroo is located on the North West fringe of Sydney’s central business district and spans an area of 22 hectares along Sydney Harbour. It is currently being redeveloped from historical shipping and stevedoring facilities by the Barrangaroo Delivery Authority (on behalf of the NSW State Government) into a world class facility comprising recreational space and parklands, high quality commercial, office and retail space, several new apartment buildings, a hotel and casino. Once completed in 2024 it will have its own metro station and will be home to 3500 residents.

Expandable Barricades for Retail Applications

Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has supplied and installed its expandable barricades at various commercial and retail locations across central and southern Barrangaroo. The retail tenancies secured have required temporary lockup with a robust and safe trackless barrier which requires no structural support, is able to be fully mobile when unlocked during trading hours, and is able to traverse multi-angled shopfront configurations over a wide span.

Where to Buy Home Security Doors

Where to Buy Home Security Doors

If you’re looking for a security door anywhere in Australia, you need to look for a supplier who has all the latest options and all the new security features. Older doors are rapidly becoming obsolete and they don’t have new features that modern security doors provide. This means older doors are increasingly a target for thieves, vandals and other intruders.

Find the Right Suppliers

When selecting a security door supplier, you need to consider a mix of products and services:

  • Products: The best suppliers have a wide range of products, which indicates expertise and a broad range of services. Look for a good selection of door designs with modern security doors like expanding trellis security doors, which are ideal for large modern homes. The wide range of domestic roller shutters and prowler-proof security screens are also good indicators of a supplier with all the top quality security products you want.
  • Services: Modern security door suppliers also offer services that work directly with your architects and specifiers. These services are excellent for custom made security solutions. They’re great for matching your security needs to your exterior design. You can also ask your suppliers about design options in context with your security needs.
  • Practical advice: The latest security doors are more complex. You can have a range of locking solutions, including 5 point pin locks, and more built into your security doors. You can also get useful advice about onsite security, managing access, and other essentials.
  • Prices: The latest security doors aren’t overly costly. Top suppliers tend to have the best prices and products are priced competitively, so you can expect to get good value from leading suppliers. Forget cheap products; you can afford top quality modern security doors.

Security Credentials – Must Haves for the Security Industry

In Australia, security industry businesses are required by state laws to hold proper security licenses. License holders must demonstrate competence and successful completion of appropriate training in security systems. These licenses also require license holders to be “fit and proper persons” to hold security licenses.

That’s good to know when you’re investing in home security and entrusting the security of your home to your suppliers. The essential point for consumers is that your suppliers must have the right credentials to provide domestic security products and services for your home.

Please also be aware that licensing information should be easily available when you’re dealing with security service providers. Ask for licensing credentials to make sure you’re dealing with a qualified security service.

How Security Door Locks Work

How Security Door Locks Work

If you have an older security door, chances are the lock is obsolete. New technologies are keeping security doors one step ahead of intruders in the arms race for home and commercial security. It’s worth understanding the value of new locking systems for improved security.

Security Door Locks Basics

New triple contact systems with 5 pin cylinder locks (or equivalent) should be a priority when choosing a security door. They will contribute to maximising the strength and effectiveness of your security door. 3-Point locks with an anti-jimmy protective metal plate or extrusion will slow down would-be intruders in their attempts to gain access to your premises, even if they have implements such as crowbars or screwdrivers.

There are also many lock options for added security:

  • For commercial premises – You also want the security door lock to be keyed alike to your master key system for ease of convenience. Master keys are easier to keep secure than a large number of different keys, which may be distributed among multiple parties. Loss of keys and related access problems for staff are also eliminated.

An added advantage of this approach is to ensure that the keys cannot be readily copied. This will give you a greater level of control over who has access to keys and it is particularly important in commercial applications. Restrictive key systems like this are ideal for good onsite security management and they’re highly effective.

  • Always avoid cheap lock imports. They’re cheap mainly because they’re inferior quality locks. Usually, these locks are made of low-grade alloys and have relatively primitive locking mechanisms. Weak locks are a very real, serious, security risk. Australian locks are specifically designed for Australian Standard rated doors and they are much more strongly constructed to meet Australian Standard requirements.

Security Doors Lock Considerations

You’ll need to consider your lock upgrades according to your practical onsite needs:

  • Home security door locks: Replace older locks ASAP. Choose a modern 3 or 5 point lock as the benchmark standard for a new lock. These locks are highly resistant and very reliable. If you’re upgrading your security doors, ask your supplier about lock options.
  • Commercial security door locks: Depending on the type of security doors you have, you may need to consider a combination of a general lock upgrades and a master key system for onsite security. This is a double security approach, managing keys while also ensuring maximum security for your doors. Your lock system should be the latest for your type of security door.

Are Security Doors Effective?

Are Security Doors Effective?

People often wonder whether or not security doors are really effective. Can they actually protect your home or commercial property from would-be thieves? The short answer is yes. Security doors are able to prevent intrusions unless intruders put significant force into gaining entry, usually using tools.

For the most part, simply the presence of security doors will prevent intruders from even attempting entry. They’re a deterrent, they’re a physical barrier, and they’re highly effective.

Security Doors Effectiveness, Explained

The actual performance of security doors needs to be explained:

Given sufficient time and using the right equipment, all security doors can be penetrated. The aim is to ensure that the security door you purchase is less vulnerable to break-ins than others – the Australian Standards AS 5039 and 5040 are an absolute minimum requirement.

Once you have established that the door (and method of installation) is Australian Standard compliant, there are other factors that will increase the likelihood that your security door will be less prone to break-ins than others.

These factors include a full steel frame, steel bar in-fills or stainless steel mesh infill, triple contact locking, and 5-pin cylinder locks (or equivalent). Avoid doors that have aluminium rivets that are exposed to intruders.

Basic flyscreen safety doors that are designed more as insect screens rather than security screen doors will stop insects and bugs (most likely) but they will not be effective against would-be intruders. A good modern security door can also provide this screening function without compromising your home security.

Security Doors Intrusion Prevention Considerations

Generally, the stronger the security door, the less likely it is to be penetrated.  The major issues are actually site-related. Security doors need to be well-suited to reduce the risk of intrusion.

Your security doors are also a useful deterrent, acting as practical obstacles to intrusion:

  • Most intruders will only attempt to force a security door if there are no easy points of access. Trying to force a security door is the most difficult way to gain entry to a property.
  • A heavy duty security door is a very demanding proposition for intruders, even if they do have the equipment required to penetrate it. Modern security doors are rated against force, including direct impacts and attempted leverage of the door frame fixtures. Forcing a security door takes time, and any good onsite security system will spot an attempted entry almost instantly.
  • Commercial security doors are even tougher. These very durable doors may include multiple folding doors, expanding doors, and commercial roller shutters. All of these doors offer very high levels of anti-intruder protection.

Purchasing Security Doors

It is very strongly recommended that residential and commercial property owners seek expert guidance on their choice of security doors. Your doors need to be right for your premises. You can also get useful help and advice from suppliers about access, security measures, locks, and other critical issues.

ATDC Installs Safety Barriers at New Ferry Terminal in Sydney

The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has recently completed a successful installation of its S04-1 DD double diamond safety barriers at the entry to the new ferry terminal at Sydney’s Barangaroo.

Safety Barriers Meet Demanding Requirements

ATDC had to overcome significant challenges to produce a safety barrier of sufficient quality that satisfied the demanding requirements of this state government project. Further information on ATDC’s Double Diamond mesh safety barriers is available on our product pages

Buy Safety barrier fencing
Rent or hire Safety barrier fencing

Being at the entry to a major utility with high volumes of pedestrian traffic at peak times, public safety was always going to be the primary concern for the government client. It became clear at an early stage that ATDC would have to produce a safety barrier that met the relevant requirements of Australian Standard AS 4687-4007 for Temporary Fencing and Hoardings, In other words the safety barrier had to comply with The Simulated Climbing Test; The Impact Test, The Foothold Aperture Test and the Wind Force Overturn test.

ATDC successfully passed all these stringent tests (other than the wind overturn test which couldn’t be properly tested as the safety barrier is an open grille) at an independent NATA testing facility in Sydney. ATDC’s portable safety barrier is the only one of its type in Australia that is now safety rated and compliant under the relevant Australian Standards. ATDC’s safety barriers already hold an independently certified WHS certification rating under the relevant Australian OH+S legislation. Further information on ATDC’s safety barrier testing is available on our product pages.

Configured for Space Efficiency

With this successful certification in place, ATDC was officially specified by Cox Architects for this prestigious project and we worked closely with Cox on all design aspects of the installation. This included finding the optimum way of configuring these safety barriers so they are stored in the most space-efficient way. Portions of the safety barrier had to be lockable at the same time as other sections remained open to control pedestrian flows during the peak periods of the day.

The project managers on the job were Gartner Rose.

The safety barriers at Barangaroo were installed at a height of 2400mm. The maximum height available is 2520mm. Other height options are available on request. Each of the safety barrier spans at Barangaroo measured approximately 8500mm wide although the maximum available width is unlimited.

Safety Barriers – Special Features

ATDC’s safety barriers are now widely regarded as stand out leaders in their field both from both a safety point of view and from the aspect of their technological advancement.

Special features include their compliance for emergency egress under the Building Code of Australia (BCA) where required; their innovative double lattice mesh which prevents persons reaching through the safety barrier mesh; and their different options for seamless secure down locking mechanisms.

Trackless, fully mobile and portable, these steel constructed safety barriers can span unlimited widths and require absolutely no overhead support structure. An option for aluminium safety barriers is also available from ATDC. More information is available on ATDC’s range of aluminium safety barriers.

Excellent for securing temporary tenancies, pop-up stores, warehouse loading areas, work-safe areas and construction sites, access control for public utilities and government facilities, crowd control for public venues and many more applications.

Security Plantation Shutters for High Rise Apartment Blocks

The Australian Trellis Door Company’s (ATDC) Security365 security rated plantation shutters are an ideal product for securing windows, patio doors, sliding glass doors and patio enclosures for strata units in high rise apartment buildings.

Security Plantation Shutters

Fabricated from reinforced aluminium heavy duty extruded sections surrounded and locked into full metal frames and further complemented by their high quality anodised finish, ATDC’s Security 365 security plantation shutters are ideal for installation on the external façade of buildings in that they are able to withstand both the forces of high wind as well as the often debilitating weathering effects of the ultra violet rays from the sun as well as rain, storms and dust. These security plantation shutters will not warp, crack, fade nor degrade on the exterior of the building. Their longevity and durability is further enhanced by a professional ultra violet resistant powdercoated finish which can be colour matched to suit almost any environment. For further information on the high grade materials involved in the construction of these security shutters view our Planation Shutters page.

Security365 – The Benefits

ATDC’s Security365 security plantation shutters offer further benefits to units in high rise apartment blocks including obvious fire advantages, privacy and shade as well as optional detachable flyscreens to keep insects at bay. And with the further benefits of preserving the often panoramic views of high rise apartment units by configuring the security plantation shutters in either a hinging or bifolding multi-track option permitting the shutters to fold back to a negligible storage size making them almost invisible. In addition the adjustability of the louvres allows the homeowner to control the exact amount of sunlight, breeze or fresh air that will permeate through into their apartment. (For further information on how these security plantation shutters will preserve your views see our article at www.trellisdoors.com.au/). The security plantation shutters are security rated under the Australian Standards for security doors and this will be of particular comfort to the unit owners on the ground floor and lower level floors of apartment buildings.

Installation Project in Brisbane

ATDC has recently installed its Security 365 security plantation shutters throughout a high rise apartment block (pictured) overlooking the Brisbane river. The project involved replacing all the previously installed  timber and plastic shutters (which had badly degraded over time to a level where they  were almost inoperable) There were naturally extremely  challenging logistics in getting the heavier grade security 365 security plantation shutters up to the higher level apartments. Scaffolding was erected throughout in an effort to overcome the restricted access and to minimise disturbance to the many apartment residents. ATDC’s professional installation team were able to work safely at heights and in extremely trying weather conditions. The project also involved obtaining council permits and the lodging of a development application. The apartment owners were extremely satisfied with the end result and the general feeling was that ATDC’s stylish security plantation shutters actually enhanced the appearance of the building. For further information on ATDC’s security plantation shutters’ excellent weathering qualities read our article.

High Security Solution

ATDC’s security 365 security plantation shutters are also applicable in providing an elegant and high security solution for commercial and retail applications such as retail display windows, showroom windows, hotel sliding doors and patio doors, office suites and office buildings, restaurants, bars, schools, universities, heritage facades and many more.

How are Security Doors Installed?

How Are Security Doors Installed?

Security doors include a range of measures to ensure that they’re both secure and tough targets for intruders. The installation of security doors is based on making access by force very difficult.

Installation Essentials

The security provided by modern security doors is based on well-defined parameters for very practical reasons. The strongest security door is ineffective if it is not properly secured to the surrounding frame. The Australian Standard AS 5040-2003 identifies the minimum acceptable requirements for installing security doors to residential properties.

In New South Wales, all installers need to hold security licences. The installer has to assess the strength of the existing frame and has to correctly install the security door using acceptable concealed fixings. If the surrounding frame is not substantial enough to support the installation and secure your door, then this frame will need to be enhanced or strengthened with further structural support before the installer can adequately attach the security door to it.

As you can see, the “security factor” is based on a range of clear metrics and performance specifications. This means that your new security door will be well-designed to handle severe stress, impacts, and other attempted intrusion methods.

Security Doors Choices and Critical Factors

Every property has its own specific security needs. The security needs for a shop, for example, will include a much more complex range of factors compared to a home. A home may only require a strong, rated conventional security door. A shop may require a heavy duty expanding security door or a folding security door.

The most important factors in security doors can be defined by examining your onsite needs:

  • Access points: Which entrances and exits require added security? Does your home need additional security for side and rear entrances? Speak to your security door suppliers about these issues to ensure that you have properly structured all-around security in place. (Also note: Your suppliers can be very helpful with important issues like lock selection, security management, and other useful onsite needs)

  • The degree of security required: This especially applies to commercial premises, which are often the targets of vandalism, as well as attempted entry. Security door choices may include heavy grilles, trackless security doors, folding security doors, etc.
  • Exterior presentation: Most homes prefer security features that deliver good exterior presentation. Many shops need the added security, but also need to manage their exterior image and visual presence. You can also get help from architects and specifiers regarding your design, security and exterior needs.
  • Cost: The good news for homeowners and commercial premises managers is that modern security doors aren’t really very expensive. Even a state of the art modern security door isn’t going to have a severe budget impact. Get a quote for the door(s) you want and compare your choices before spending a cent. You’ll find costs are easily manageable, and your suppliers can help with budget-friendly options.
