ATDC™ Installs FC1 Bifold Door Closures at WH Smith Sydney Airport
Australian Trellis Door Co (ATDC™) has recently installed its FC1 bifold doors closures at the new WH Smith store at Sydney International Airport.
WH Smith Sydney International Airport
The Client:
WH Smith is a British-based global retailer of books, stationery, newspapers, magazines, and entertainment products, employing over 14,000 staff in over 1,400 locations around the globe.
Quality Security Grilles & Closures
ATDC’s bi-fold doors were ideal in this application given the massive size of WH Smith’s storefront (totalling nearly 53 lineal metres) with its irregular curved shapes, sloping floors, and the requirement for ventilation. This was achieved through the perforated metal finish of the screen, which permitted maximum airflow. Lexan, polycarbonate, aluminium, or even tempered glass are other optional finishes, providing flexibility to meet diverse needs.
Advantages of ATDC’s Bi-Fold Doors
ATDC’s bi-fold doors have the added advantage of spanning large apertures without the need for cumbersome removable mullions and costly motorisation options. Additionally, the folding doors can accommodate difficult potential obstructions such as multi-level counters and counter cut-outs. The option of including emergency egress doors within the folding door allows for Building Code of Australia (BCA) compliance where necessary, enhancing safety and accessibility.
Versatile Installation Options
ATDC’s folding doors can be installed as either internal bi-fold doors or external bi-fold doors for commercial premises, making them extremely versatile. These folding doors are available in a natural anodised finish or can be custom powder-coated and colour-coordinated to blend in with almost any colour scheme. This adaptability ensures that the doors can meet the aesthetic and functional requirements of various commercial environments.
Durability and Customisation
The FC1 bifold doors are designed for durability and long-term use, ensuring that WH Smith’s storefront remains secure and aesthetically pleasing. The ability to customise finishes and colours means that the doors can seamlessly integrate with the store’s overall design, providing both security and visual appeal.

A Classy Way to Increase Security
Although the focus recently has been placed on new ways to protect your commercial properties from crime and potential dangers, we must remember and consider the more traditional and reliable ways to protect your workplace.
Roller shutters have consistently been one such reliable way to increase security. Roller shutters are cost effective and proven. Trellis Doors are experts in the roller shutter field and have a range of commercial roller shutters and residential roller shutters for you to select depending on your needs and budget.
Security Roller Shutters from The Australian Trellis Door Co
Protect Your Windows with Shutters
A roller shutter, roller door or sectional overhead door is a type of door or window shutter consisting of many horizontal slats (or sometimes bars or web systems) hinged together. Roller shutters are used as a method of insulation and can protect windows against hail damage. In this Australian climate, any further weather protection from the conditions is an additional bonus.
Investing in a roller shutter may seem like a big cost to bear but when you think about the total cost of replacing damaged and stolen goods or the invaluable cost of the safety of your family, it is a small price to pay. In a 2011 paper from the NSW Government on retail crime, the paper found that theft is the number one cause of loss in retail.
Another interesting key finding the report highlights is as retailers spent less on loss prevention and security during the economic crisis, theft from stores increased. Although economic times are tough at the moment, cutting corners and spending less on security is not a good way to save money in the long term. By cutting costs in this area, you could potentially be setting yourself up for even greater costs down the track.
This goes hand in hand with an article from The Sydney Morning Herald that states crime against small businesses is rising due to increased financial pressures. When times are tough, people turn to crime. This is why it is essential to have good and proven security measures in place.
The Australian Climate
With the increasing speculation over climate change, the Australian climate is very unpredictable and at times quite harsh. The Telegraph outlines that Sydney experienced its warmest cold season in 150 years. If this is any indication of what is to come, Sydney and other parts of Australia could be on track for one of the hottest summers yet.
With the increase in electricity, methods such as air conditioning are more expensive than ever. Roller shutters are a great way to keep the house cool in summer without the big bill every month. With Trellis Doors roller shutters, your home is up to 90% cooler in summer and up to 70% warmer in winter, while you also get year-round protection against intruders, noise, rain, hail, wind, debris and damaging UV rays.
Investing in roller shutters is a great way to avoid hefty electricity bills down the track.
Automatic or Manual Shutters
Now that you’re considering investing in roller shutters, the next thing to look at is automatic or manual roller shutters? A recent article outlined the key points for and against manual and electric roller shutters. The article states that electric roller shutters are very easy to use, convenient and you can open and close them whenever you want, wherever you are.
You can also fit sensors in electric roller shutters and they tend to be low maintenance. However, electric roller shutters are more expensive and take longer to install.
For those on a tight budget, electric roller shutters may not be a feasible option. Manual roller shutters on the other hand are very popular as they are very cost effective and the crank/winder is very easily accessible and easy to use. However, manual shutters are not as convenient; you need to open and close them yourself and can require more maintenance than electric shutters.

The custom designed security shutter for KFC Sans Souci has the top 400mm of the Series 2 security shutter from The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) manufactured with a perforated mesh. This design permits ventilation while still maintaining security, making it particularly useful for restaurants, retail spaces, and other environments where airflow is important.

Do heavy-duty roller doors with ventilation mesh reduce noise transmission from outside compared to fully solid shutters?
They will still reduce noise, but not as much as a fully solid roller shutter with a solid curtain.
How do heavy-duty ventilated roller doors perform in high-humidity or coastal environments — does the mesh cause any corrosion issues over time?
These aluminium extruded shutters have a good level of resistance to corrosion with their clear anodised coatings often also further protected with a professional powdercoated overcoat.
What happens if the power fails while a motorised shutter is closed?
The motors are equipped with a de-clutching cable that allows for manual operation during power outages for emergency access, and some systems can be fitted with an optional Battery Backup (UPS).

ATDC’s S08 Retractable Curved Steel Security Screen Installed at Brisbane Central State School
Securing the New General Learning Centre
ATDC’s increasingly popular S08 retractable curved steel security screen has recently been installed to secure the new General Learning Centre at Brisbane Central State School. Specified by Queensland-based Towill Design, this impressive installation highlights the versatility and robustness of the S08 model.
Meeting Unique Architectural Needs
The very large screen, measuring 14 metres wide by 3.7 metres high, was designed to traverse two different radius turns to conform with the curvature of the building. This ability to adapt to complex architectural requirements makes the S08 an ideal choice for modern educational facilities that often feature unique and innovative designs.
Top-Hung System with No Floor Track
The S08 retractable security screen is a top-hung door system with no floor track, ensuring an unobstructed pathway and reducing potential trip hazards. Instead, it is secured through a system of multiple intermediate up/down locking mechanisms along its span. This design provides seamless security without compromising the aesthetic or functional aspects of the space.
Project Management and Installation
Badge Constructions (QLD) managed the project, ensuring that the installation met all specifications and quality standards. The successful integration of the S08 screen into the General Learning Centre demonstrates ATDC’s capability to deliver customised security solutions that cater to the specific needs of educational institutions.
Ideal for Educational Facilities
The S08 retractable curved steel security screen is particularly well-suited for schools, universities, and other educational facilities. Its robust construction and adaptable design provide reliable security while accommodating various architectural styles. The absence of a floor track further enhances safety and ease of use, making it a practical choice for high-traffic areas.
The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) offers its S06 heavy-duty trellis security door, a robust solution designed to include an emergency egress facility. This feature enables keyless exit in applications where safety regulations require it, making the S06 door ideal for commercial and retail environments needing high security without compromising safety.
Heavy Duty Trellis Security Doors with Emergency Egress
Emergency Egress Door 1
Advanced Security Features
To enhance security further, the S06 trellis door is equipped with a completely transparent Lexan plate. This plate effectively prevents individuals from reaching through the door’s mesh from the outside to release the internal lever handle. The Lexan plate combines strength and transparency, providing an extra layer of security while maintaining a sleek, unobtrusive appearance.
For added protection, external access to the S06 door requires a key. This ensures that only authorised personnel can gain entry, while the internal emergency egress function allows for quick and safe exit during emergencies.
Real-World Installation: BWS Singleton, NSW
The versatility of the S06 heavy-duty trellis security door was demonstrated in a recent installation at a BWS store in Singleton, New South Wales. Located a few hours north of Sydney, this store required a security solution that met stringent safety and operational standards. The installation featured the Lexan plate and emergency egress setup, highlighting the door’s adaptability and effectiveness in real-world applications.
Customised Solutions for Diverse Needs
ATDC’s S06 trellis doors can be customised to meet the specific needs of different projects, ensuring an optimal combination of security, functionality, and compliance. This flexibility makes the S06 door suitable for retail, industrial, and commercial spaces.
Australian Trellis Door Co (ATDC™) recently completed the installation of a heavy-duty concertina door at The University of Western Australia (UWA) in Perth. The installation was designed to secure the university canteen, separating it from the adjacent library for after-hours use by students. This innovative solution ensures that students can access the canteen while the library remains securely closed, providing convenience and security in a single, elegant design.
ATDC Secures University Canteen with Heavy Duty Concertina Door
Spanning Large Areas with Ease
The UWA project presented the challenge of securing very large openings, with spans measuring 9700mm and 6500mm wide. ATDC met this challenge by installing its S06 heavy-duty concertina door, a robust and versatile security solution that is well-suited for large spaces. The door’s scissor-action cross-linkages allow for maximum ventilation, ensuring that the canteen remains well-ventilated even when the door is closed. This feature is particularly important in environments where air circulation is crucial for comfort and safety.
Seamless Lock-Up and Minimal Storage
One of the key features of ATDC’s concertina door is its seamless lock-up system. The door is suspended from a heavy-duty top track, which is supported by a structural overhead beam, eliminating the need for a floor track or removable mullions. This design not only ensures a secure lock-up but also allows the door to concertina sideways into a minimal storage compaction size, making it virtually invisible when not in use. The absence of a floor track also means there are no trip hazards, further enhancing the safety and usability of the space.
Professional Project Management
The installation at UWA was managed by Subiaco-based builder Fairweather & Sons, who ensured that the project was completed to the highest standards.
