There are many advantages in using retractable security doors instead of other security systems currently available on the market.

Commercial Applications

In commercial applications, roller shutters tend to be limiting in situations where headroom is limited.

Also, on wider openings, it becomes necessary to use intermediate removeable mullions, which tend to be unwieldy and can often lead to maintenance problems and OH+S issues for staff.

Retractable security doors, on the other hand, occupy no headroom and can span almost any width (SO5 1 heavy-duty commercial steel security door).

Roller shutters are difficult to install on curved apertures whereas retractable security doors can accommodate curves as tight as 90 degrees over a 600mm tight radius making them particularly suitable for curved shopfronts, curved restaurant frontages and the like (SO8 curved trellis security door).

Domestic Retractable Security Gates

Domestic Application

In a domestic application alternative products include stainless steel mesh screens, steel wrought iron and aluminium security doors, and domestic roller shutters. Stainless steel screens are great. However, they tend to darken the room, whereas retractable security doors allow all the sunlight in, making your home bright and airy (SO2 1 ultra deluxe security door system).

Aluminium roller shutters are excellent to secure smaller windows however are not very secure over larger openings such as sliding glass bifold doors as compared to retractable security doors which can secure any opening no matter how wide (SO3 concertina security door system).

Possible Aesthetic Limits

Wrought iron doors and aluminium security doors are limited in that they cannot compact back to a manageable size when unlocked and open and so hence tend to obscure your views and create a jail-like effect as compared to retractable security doors which fold back out of the way and tuck away neatly behind curtains or blinds so as to be almost invisible (SO1 economy safety door system).

PROJECT DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

The security gates on this project have a distinctive design which is popular throughout South East Asia and Australasia. The steel constructed gates retract sideways out of the way in a scissor action and into a compact storage area so as to be almost invisible during trading hours. The diagonal cross members between the lattice members are spaced in a configuration to permit maximum ventilation and through visibility through the curtain of the gates. Further unique advantages of this gate are the absence of any requirement for any overhead headroom and a removable floor track to the doorway entry gate so as to eliminate any trip hazards.

Shutter Product Design Specifications

This double walled extruded roller shutter is manually operated, spring counter-balanced, and has a key lockable cylinder on the bottom rail for extra security. Electric operation is an extra option which is available.

The finish on this project was a Dulux Duralloy powdercoat.

Heavy Duty Commercial Roller shutters by The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC)

The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has installed  its heavy duty extruded RS3 commercial roller shutter at Toymate’s new store at Watergardens Shopping Centre at Taylors Lake, a suburb north west of Melbourne.

Finished in a striking bright Blaze Blue powdercoat from the standard dulux duralloy powdercoat range, these electric operated shutters each spanned a width of 4m wide x 3m high. The installation required battery back up facilities to prevent any down time in trading  in the event of a future power failure in the shopping centre. Extra security was provided by the installation of key switches which restricts the number of persons able to operate the shutters.

Project manager for the installation was Red Box Displays.

The white powder coated, folding door on this application is approximately 6m wide x 3 m high. The slimline curtain panels are just 150mm in width and are fabricated from heavy duty extruded aluminium components with interlocking hinges and commercial grade hangar rollers. The curtain on the project is fabricated with a polycarbonate infill making it completely transparent and allowing maximum through vision. ATDC also has a 200mm and 300mm panel width option in its range.

EXPANDABLE BARRIERS FOR LOW CLEARANCE

ATDC has an extensive range of options of expandable barriers for low clearance or low headroom applications.

ATDC has installed one of its heavy-duty expandable barriers to secure the premises of the Cancer Council at Eastwood, South Australia near Adelaide.

 

PROJECT DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

The expandable barrier installed in this application spanned a 9 metre wide carpark entry which had a restricted height limitation of less than 2400mm high and almost no available space for an overhead support structure.

A slimline heavy duty RHS support beam was installed and the expandable barrier’s 40mm heigh extruded aluminium top tracking system was installed directly to this.

Other limitations on this installation included a requirement for no floor tracking due to the passage of cars and other vehicles through the car park entry.

Accordingly, lock up was achieved through a series of intermediate up/down locks which provide seamless security without the need for any removable floor track.

ATDC has installed its multi-application GS3 glass stacking door to secure the entry to the new Lululemon store at Westfields Sydney City at the corner of Pitt Street Mall.

Lululemon is a global athletic apparel retailer with over 710 stores across the world and headquartered in Canada.

PROJECT DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

Pioneered by our experienced in-house engineering team after years of intensive R&D the glass stacking door on this project spanned 7000mm wide x 3000mm high and it is designed with its panels centrally top hung and without any floor track. It is manually operated, and the individual panels are suspended from commercial grade hangar rollers housed in stainless steel carriages from an overhead extruded aluminium suspension track. The panel infill on the doors on this project is a 6.38mm translucent laminated safety glass. Locking is achieved through down locks which secure the door in position by means of key operated shoot bolts into the floor. A hinging door was supplied on this project for emergency egress purposes.
