Folding Doors Installed for Prestigious Cruising Yacht Club
The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) recently completed a project to the member’s bar at the prestigious Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) at Sydney’s Rushcutters Bay. The project required the installation of bar closure doors along their curved bar countertop.
Bar Closure Doors
The Client
The CYCA is one of Australia’s leading yacht clubs, and is widely reputed as one of the leaders in ocean racing in the country. It is probably best known as the host of the world-famous annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race.
The Project
Specified by renowned architectural firm Allen Jack + Cottier (AJ + C), the project involved installing ATDC’s 300mm wide panel bar closure doors in a black powdercoated finish.
Being in a bar environment with the prevalence of alcohol and food, a fully perforated mesh infill was specified for the bar counter door curtain for ventilation purposes.
ATDC’s Solution
ATDC’s up/down locking mechanisms assisted in achieving seamless lock up, which also required the ability to gain entry to the bar area without the need for opening up the entire door.
Project managers for the job were St Leonards-based Belmadar Constructions.
ATDC sells its security doors in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra as well as in all regional areas across Australia including Townsville, Darwin, Hobart, Newcastle and Geelong.

Frequently Asked Questions
What applications are roller shutters and grilles designed for?
Roller shutters, security shutters, and roller grilles suit retail shopfronts, hospitality venues, commercial countertops, food service areas, reception desks, shopping arcades, and industrial openings where security, visibility, and airflow matter.
Why roller grilles do not require bottom tracks?
All roller grilles use side guides with brush seals that allow smooth operation without floor tracks.
What distinguishes solid roller shutters from roller grilles?
Solid roller shutters provide complete security and light blocking for maximum protection, while roller grilles prioritise visibility and ventilation through punched patterns or clear sections, ideal for displaying stock after hours.
How wide can single sections of commercial roller span?
Electric shutter single sections typically span up to 5.5 meters wide depending on the model, with larger openings covered using center mullions to maintain strength and smooth operation across wide shopfronts or arcades
What colour finishes are available for commercial roller shutters?
Natural clear anodised or colour powdercoated options are available.
Do commercial roller grilles and shutters have a warranty?
A full 12 month warranty on parts.,labour and installation is a standard offering.
Whether you are a homeowner or business owner, The Australian Trellis Door Co (ATDC™) has a full range of heavy duty and budget grade retractable security doors to suit your application and secure your premises.
There are many advantages in using retractable security doors instead of other security systems currently available on the market.
Commercial Retractable Security Gates
Commercial Applications
In commercial applications, roller shutters tend to be limiting in situations where headroom is limited.
Also, on wider openings, it becomes necessary to use intermediate removeable mullions, which tend to be unwieldy and can often lead to maintenance problems and OH+S issues for staff.
Roller shutters are difficult to install on curved apertures whereas retractable security doors can accommodate curves as tight as 90 degrees over a 600mm tight radius making them particularly suitable for curved shopfronts, curved restaurant frontages and the like (SO8 curved trellis security door).
Our Double Diamond security doors are unique. The design makes it impossible to get your hand through and reach products behind the door. This is great for shops with small items like phones, cosmetics and jewellery. (S04 Double Diamond security door)
In a domestic application alternative products include stainless steel mesh screens, steel wrought iron and aluminium security doors, and domestic roller shutters. Stainless steel screens are great. However, they tend to darken the room, whereas retractable security doors allow all the sunlight in, making your home bright and airy (SO2 1 ultra deluxe security door system).
Aluminium roller shutters are excellent to secure smaller windows however are not very secure over larger openings such as sliding glass bifold doors as compared to retractable security doors which can secure any opening no matter how wide (SO3 concertina security door system).
Possible Aesthetic Limits
Wrought iron doors and aluminium security doors are limited in that they cannot compact back to a manageable size when unlocked and open and so hence tend to obscure your views and create a jail-like effect as compared to retractable security doors which fold back out of the way and tuck away neatly behind curtains or blinds so as to be almost invisible (SO1 economy safety door system).

Heavy Duty Commercial Roller shutters by The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC)
The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has installed its heavy duty extruded RS3 commercial roller shutter at Toymate’s new store at Watergardens Shopping Centre at Taylors Lake, a suburb north west of Melbourne.
Finished in a striking bright Blaze Blue powdercoat from the standard dulux duralloy powdercoat range, these electric operated shutters each spanned a width of 4m wide x 3m high. The installation required battery back up facilities to prevent any down time in trading in the event of a future power failure in the shopping centre. Extra security was provided by the installation of key switches which restricts the number of persons able to operate the shutters.
Project manager for the installation was Red Box Displays.

Frequently Asked Questions
What type of roller shutters are best for a petrol station?
For a petrol station, solid aluminium commercial roller shutters (like the RS3 series) with manual or simple motorised operation are typically the most practical, cost-effective choice.
What benefits do double walled shutters provide for fuel station security?
Double walled extruded slats offer superior strength and impact resistance, an ideal deterrent for protecting high-value fuel station retail areas from break-ins and vandalism.
What are the benefits of powder-coating roller shutters for a petrol station?
Powder coating not only protects the shutter from corrosion and weathering, but also allows petrol station owners to match the shutters to their brand colours or signage.
Can roller shutters be custom fitted?
Yes. Shutters are custom-manufactured to the exact width and height of each opening
What maintenance is recommended for roller shutters at a petrol station?
Basic maintenance includes keeping guide tracks clear of debris, inspecting the curtain for damage, and lubricating moving parts periodically. Regular checks help ensure smooth operation, extend the life of the shutters, and maintain security integrity.
How quickly can roller shutters be installed for a newly opened business?
Installation timelines depend on custom manufacturing and site conditions. A site measure and quote are performed first, and once manufactured, installation is scheduled promptly to minimise disruption to operations.
