The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) had a significant share of the work supplying and installing a wide variety of its range of shopfront closures at the recently opened redevelopment to Westfield Coomera near QLD’s Gold Coast.
Westfield Coomera is a $470m development and is Scentre Group’s first Greenfield development. It is a joint venture with QICGRE.The project spans in excess of 59 000 square metres and will offer 140 specialty retails stores once completed.
ATDC’s shopfront closures were specified across many of the specialty stores throughout the shopping centre by the Westfield Design team and ATDC will individually feature some of these unique projects in a series of news releases over the upcoming weeks.
Some examples of the different types of doors installed on these specialty retail shopfronts included ATDC’S FC1 Folding Closures,S08 curved trellis Doors,S06 straight line trellis doors,S04-1 trackless barriers as well as the S07-2 side-by-side space minimizing closures.

The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) offers a range of rapid roll high speed doors suitable for use in fresh produce manufacturing, logistics and cold storage.
Ideal Doors for Fresh Produce Warehouse by ATDC
High Speed Door
Consider the challenges faced by a large scale producer of fresh produce. Take fruit as an example. Such facilities generally consist of processing areas, storage coolers, and cold loading docks. The cold loading docks need to be kept at specific temperatures. Storage coolers within the loading dock areas need to be kept at different temperatures to ensure product integrity. All areas need to be accessed by forklifts through numerous doorways. The processing area needs to be kept at another temperature, at a lower humidity level than the others, to prevent food from “sweating” i.e. condensation that can spoil the food.
Separating Areas Effectively
These different areas of the building need to be separated to help control temperature and humidity. Rapid roll high speed doors are a perfect solution. They operate quickly (high cycle time) preventing a large amount of warm air entering these areas when the doors are activated. This in turn lowers energy costs. The fabric of the doors also plays an important role in temperature and humidity control, and hygiene.
Easy and Safe Access
These doors can employ motion sensors to activate the doors if a forklift is approaching. This ensures forklifts don’t bump into them and damage them, requiring produce to be quickly moved to different locations of suitable temperature. What’s more, certain rapid roll high speed doors can withstand impact from e.g. forklifts, meaning that if a forklift drives into these doors, they can reload themselves back into their tracks and continue operating as normal. This minimises costly maintenance and downtime.
The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) recently installed custom expandable security gates at Kurri Kurri Bowling Club, located near Cessnock in the Hunter Valley, NSW. These shutters serve to protect the club’s poker machines within its gaming rooms while also aiding in compliance with NSW smoking laws.
ATDC Installs Expandable Security Shutters at Kurri Kurri Bowling Club
Security shutters for poker machines in bowling club gaming rooms
Balancing Security and Compliance with Smoking Law
The need for secure shutters arose not only to safeguard the club’s valuable poker machines but also to comply with NSW smoking legislation. NSW laws require that designated smoking areas in licensed premises be open to the outdoors to allow smoke to dissipate efficiently.
Precision-Engineered, Custom Solutions
ATDC designed, engineered, and custom-made each shutter specifically to fit the designated apertures within the club’s gaming rooms. Each security shutter is top-hung from strong RHS steel structural members, which were also designed, supplied, and installed by ATDC. The shutters were powder-coated in a sleek black satin finish to complement the club’s existing décor.
Ventilation, Visibility, and Security Combined
These expandable security shutters offer full ventilation, thanks to their open-grille design with mesh infills. This ensures compliance with smoking laws while maintaining a secure barrier for the gaming machines. When not in use, the shutters conveniently fold away, occupying only 15% of their fully expanded width, maximising space efficiency. Fully framed, lockable, and secure, they provide a robust solution for protecting assets without compromising on airflow or aesthetics.
National and International Availability
ATDC’s extendable gates are available in major Australian cities, including Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, and Canberra, as well as in regional towns like Newcastle, Geelong, Darwin, Townsville, Hobart, the Sunshine Coast, and the Gold Coast. They are also exported throughout Southeast Asia, the Asia Pacific, the UAE, and the Pacific Islands.

The end client, the internationally renowned Paradise Seeker Group, is known for its luxury resort accommodations, focusing on sophisticated style and taste.
ATDC Supplies High-End Security Shutters to Barbados Hotel Project
Retractable Security Shutter for Hotel
Premium Features for a High-Profile Project
The retractable security shutters were selected primarily for their exceptional weathering and anti-corrosive properties, making them ideal for the harsh marine environment of Barbados. Additionally, their first-class finish and high-end appeal made them a perfect match for this luxury hotel project. Discover more detailed information on the anti-corrosive properties of these shutters.
Durable and Stylish Construction
These shutters are fabricated from anodised aluminium and were powder-coated in a Matt Dark Bronze Finish to seamlessly blend with the surrounding aluminium window frames. The use of stainless steel rivets and fixings ensures the product’s longevity, even in the highly corrosive marine environment. The shutters feature a high-security 3-way locking mechanism that can be easily keyed to master security systems.
Fully framed and retractable, these shutters fold back out of the way and out of sight when not in use, maximising both outlook and views. They are also fully ventilated, allowing for the free flow of fresh air and maximum sunlight penetration into the rooms they secure.
Global Reach and Availability
ATDC’s home retractable security shutters are exported throughout the Asia Pacific, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and the UAE. They are also available locally across Australia.
The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has pioneered a triple-track commercial bifold door system or scissor doors that achieves major storage space advantages for its customers.
ATDC’s Triple Track Commercial Bifold Door System
Side by Side bifold door for shopfront
Efficient Design for Maximum Retail Frontage
In a recent commercial fitout project for Natalie Marie Jewellery at Avalon in Sydney, Annandale-based interior architect X+O specified an S07-2 side-by-side parallel top track arrangement for ATDC’s commercial bifold door at the front of the retail store. The design intent was to minimise the side stacking depth of the door, providing maximum retail frontage for the client. Read further product information and technical details. about our triple track, commercial bifold door.
Overcoming Storage Space Limitations Onsite
Once onsite, the project manager, LJW Building, encountered further door storage space limitations, requiring a maximum stack depth of 8% of the shopfront span. To meet this requirement, ATDC installed its bifold door in a triple top track configuration, achieving a door stack of just 450mm over a 5700mm shopfront opening span. This incredible achievement is essential for retailers and commercial businesses aiming to maximise their trading space in high-rent properties.
Seamless Lock-Up and No Floor Track Required
The triple-track system offers seamless lock-up with a series of intermittent up/down locking mechanisms, requiring no floor track or removable mullions. The attached image demonstrates the successful setup of this recent installation.
Available Nationwide and Internationally
ATDC’s commercial bifold doors are available in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Canberra, and Adelaide, as well as regional centres across Australia, including Darwin, Townsville, Hobart, Geelong, Newcastle, and the Sunshine and Gold Coast regions. They are also being exported internationally throughout South East Asia, the Asia Pacific, the Pacific Islands, and the UAE.
The Australian Trellis Door Company’s (ATDC) Permashield concertina shutters are gaining significant market penetration both in the commercial and retail markets.
ATDC Provides Shutters for Specsavers and More Brands Globally
Specsavers Concertina Folding Door
Specsavers Project
The above photograph shows a recent installation at Specsavers Moonee Ponds, Victoria, which follows on from other installations for this global brand. Here, the project manager was from Australasian Retail Projects out of Queensland. The door was powder-coated in a special colour bright silver metallic finish, to meet the requirements of Moonee Ponds Central Shopping Centre.
What Did We Specify for the Project?
These quality, precision engineered permashield concertina doors are constructed from extruded aluminium panel sections with interlocking heavy duty hinges and roller bearings which allow the curtain to easily slide and retract whilst suspended from a heavy duty aluminium top track. Available in either a wide body 300mm panel or slimline section 150mm, the shutters are user friendly and look the goods with their smooth lines and sleek aesthetic design.
Ease of Use
They offer the operator seamless lock up options with intermediate up/down locking mechanisms and without the need for any floor track with its attendant trip hazard disadvantages. With maximum height at approximately 4500mm, curtain infill options include either 3mm polycarbonate, perforated mesh or solid aluminium depending on the application.
Curved configurations are quite a regular application including special radius turns and S-bends.
Why are They So Popular?
This quality product has gained the attention of many architectural specifiers for a range of different commercial and retail projects across the country. And with the confidence of ATDC’s 35 year successful trading record of outstanding service to back up its product range, customers are increasingly specifying these concertina shutters on prestigious projects.

Radio Rentals’ quality range of high-value products are a natural target for persons wishing to profit through theft by break and entering through the various storefront entries.
The Group has for many years turned to the high level of security provided by The Australian Trellis Door Company’s (ATDC) security doors to protect their stores and their merchandise. The above photograph shows a recent typical installation at the Group’s Penrith Store in Sydney’s outer western suburbs.
Protecting High-Value Products with ATDC
The History of Radio Rentals
Radio Rentals was formed in 1930 in Brighton, Sussex, UK, with a turnover in the first year of £780. It later moved into televisions and ultimately video recorders. Growth of a public TV service after the war encouraged more people to want TV sets, but they were expensive, leaving an opportunity for Radio Rentals to offer them out as an affordable monthly rental. Video recorders and a range of white goods came next as the business took off.
The Radio Rentals Story in Australia
The Radio Rentals story in Australia began with a single shopfront in Market Street, Sydney, in 1937. Today, it is Australia’s leading household appliance, technology, and furniture rental company, with over 70 stores in Australia and nearly 30 stores in New Zealand and more than 500 employees. The parent company is Thorn Group Limited.
The S06 Security Door: A Flagship Solution
ATDC’s flagship shopfront door is their model S06 security door, which is compliant with the Australian Standards for Sliding Security Doors, having successfully passed the stringent testing requirements for Dynamic Impact, Anti-Jimmy, and Pull Testing.
Why Leading Retailers Choose ATDC
Many of Australia’s leading retailers are installing ATDC’s shopfront security doors to protect their stores against break and enter as it is a relatively inexpensive yet effective deterrent and a favourite choice for both loss prevention managers and insurers alike.
A Unique Approach to Retail Security
ATDC is a well-renowned security-licensed company with a solid trading record dating back to 1984. The company installs shopfront security doors that enhance the customer-friendly retail experience without presenting a harsh, jail-like image.
ATDC’s shopfront security doors are unique in that they concertina and slide back neatly out of the way during retail trading hours to be almost invisible. However, when the store is closed for trade at night, they provide a formidable deterrent while at the same time permitting retailers to maximise the visibility of their products on display.
Read more about some of the blue-chip companies installing these security screens.
Additional Features and Benefits
ATDC’s shopfront security doors have other unique features that make them appealing to both retailers and other commercial customers. These include their ability to offer special emergency egress where required under the BCA—this includes the ability to implement keyless locking on exit from the premises while still retaining the security provided by these doors.
Further advantages include ATDC’s ability to significantly reduce side stacking by implementing innovative storage minimisation techniques. This is achieved by altering the configurations in which their shopfront security doors are installed. Read about our S07 scissor doors.
Architectural Appeal and Availability
In addition, these doors, with their sharp jagged lines and angled metal parts, have an eye-catching, edgy look and feel to them. This results in many customers selecting them when wishing to make a statement or merely keeping up with the latest architectural trends. Certainly, a standout and something different from the often staid and more common appearance of traditional roller shutters and folding doors that have graced retail store design in this country for decades.
National and International Reach
ATDC’s shopfront security doors are currently sold in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, and Canberra, as well as in all regional towns across the country, including Newcastle, Geelong, Wollongong, Townsville, Darwin, Hobart, Sunshine, and Gold Coast regions. ATDC’s Security Installation at Westfield Fountain Gate
Project Management and Purpose of Installation
The project was managed by Daicor Commercial Property Services Pty Ltd, based in Malvern, Victoria. These gates were installed as access control devices and effective loss prevention tools across various areas, including multiple tenancies, the food court, and entry and exit points for the centre’s travelators.
Growing Demand Across Major Shopping Centres
This installation follows a trend across many Westfield sites in Australia and among other leading shopping centre groups, including those managed or owned by LendLease, Stocklands, AMP, Colonial First State, QIC, and Vicinity Centres. ATDC’s extendable gates are increasingly sought after for their reliability and quality.
Reasons for ATDC’s Premier Position in Extendable Gates
ATDC has become Australia’s premier supplier of high-grade extendable gates for several important reasons:
1 Safety and Compliance
Many ATDC gates are OH+S tested to ensure safe operation and public safety. They come with a documented WHS Risk Assessment.
2 Australian Standards Testing
The gates comply with Australian Standards for Dynamic Impact, Simulated Climbing, and Foothold Aperture, which is critical for government applications. Read more.
3 Emergency Egress Compliance

The City of Sydney is working with leading private developers to create a new and sustainable £13 billion, 14-hectare urban renewal project, Green Square, with world-class community facilities and extensive infrastructure. ATDC provided extendable safety barriers to the new library.
ATDC Trusted by the City of Sydney to Provide Safety Barriers to Green Square
It is projected that by 2030 Green Square will house 61,000 people and 22,000 new workers, only 3.5 km from the CBD in Sydney’s Inner South and 4 km from the International Airport at Mascot.
Green Square Library Benefits from ATDC Security
A small part of this investment includes construction of a new community library, and The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has recently installed one of its unique extendable safety barriers at the library entry.
Specified by Sydney architect, Stewart Hollenstein, ATDC worked closely with project managers John Holland in delivering a custom-made lock-up door solution to this prestigious project. ATDC’s S04-1 DD Double Diamond mesh extendable safety barrier was the door of choice for the project architect since it provided a freestanding yet economic security solution and was able to be installed in the absence of any available support structure.
Compliant with Rigorous Standards Worldwide
In addition, ATDC’s unique barriers not only comply with the Australian Standards for Temporary Fencing and Hoardings but are also compliant with the emergency egress requirements of the BCA, allowing keyless egress in the event of an emergency. Being installed at the entry to the public library, it was essential that this emergency egress facility was incorporated into the design of the barrier system. ATDC installed a similar system for the State Transit Authority at Barangaroo at the entry to the new ferry terminal.
Library Project Specifications
The crowd control barrier system was installed at the foot of the stairs to the library entry and was formatted in a U-shaped configuration to completely surround the balustrading on the stairs. (See photograph of the installation above).
Supplied at a standard height of 2020 mm, the mobile and portable extendable safety barrier was installed on a series of heavy-duty non-marking thermoplastic castors and was finished in a satin black powder coat. Intermediate shoot bolts, which engage with the finished floor, were used to stabilise the barrier system.
